Freelander 1 Heated windscreen retrofit?

Has anyone fitted a heated windscreen in a Freelander 1 that didn't have one?

I have to get a new windscreen fitted at my own expense (so not covered by insurance). By Jag has an electrically heated windscreen and it's brilliant so I asked the windscreen guy to order a heated one for the Freelander.

He is coming on Friday.

I can always wire up the electrics later. I might just have the rear screen fire a relay that also supplies the front one, so one switch does both.

Anyway has anyone done this before?

The Freelander is a 2002.
 
It would be relatively easy to retrofit a heated front screen, although the screen itself is very expensive, however IMO definitely worth it. I only buy vehicles fitted with the HFS.
 
I am wondering if the heated screen has a strange connector or whether I can just plug in with spade terminals.

I can't remember the type of connector used, but it's likely adaptable to something available, although sourcing the correct HFS harness wouldn't be difficult, as it's seperate from the normal vehicle harness.
 
My facelift was pre wired to the switch, I got all the other wiring for under the front scuttle panel, relay etc from one from a scrapyard. That way all the wiring is the correct rating for the job.
There are 2 connections on the screen one left side and one right for power with an earth wire going to each inner wing.
 
Thank you Andy. It looks like they are just standard spades with a silicon boot over them.

Does anyone know the fuse rating of the heated front screen?
 
Someone is breaking an 04-06 Freelander just 20 min up the M40 from me. Maybe I can get the factory loom off of them.
 
I picked up the loom today and had a look at a scrap Freelander that still had the heated screen in it.
It looks like there is quite a lot of the loom that is actually part of the screen, and when the screen is glued in this part of the loom actually pokes through the glue and doesn't go inside the car at all. This is useful to know because I'm guessing that the windscreen guy wouldn't have realised.

Just been looking for these. By the looks of it the part number is CMB000480.

Genuine ones look to be about £600. Rimmers list the genuine and an aftermarket one for £330.

Ribble Valley list an aftermarket that looks to be sourced from Bearmach for £178.

These are obviously not fitted.

When I go on the Bearmach website, they only let me buy from "New Zealand" and quote a price of $1,500 - £750.

As far as I know, all vehicle heated screen wiring is outside the cabin, normally under the scuttle panel where the wiper spindles protrude, the FL1 and FL2 are no exception, so no, there's no wiring inside, other than the switch, and maybe active the HFS in the CCU software. ;)
 
My fl1 td4 hse came with the heated front screen as standard I'm guessing, but when I brought it the people who owned it prior to me had removed the relay and fuses for the heated front screen iv purchased a new relay from Landrover and fitted new fuses and it seems that it is constantly on even with car off and locked. Iv checked the connections on the bottom of the screen and they are all good and tidy. Would I be right in thinking then that there is a dead short somewhere that's keeping it on?

A dead short would blow the fuses.

If it's staying on, then you could to check the switch, but that times out after 10 minutes or so, the problem is likely elsewhere.

The control for the HFS is done by the CCU, be that the time it's on for, or if the engine is running, as the HFS won't operate if the engine isn't running.

I'm guessing the CCU pulls the under bonnet relay to ground, so it could even be a the control wire is grounded when it shouldn't be, so between the CCU and HFS relay.
It needs investigation, as the screen will flatten the battery really quickly.
 
bit of a strange one put relay and fuses in wiggled all the wires and light on switch stays on.... But if I press the clutch downward the light on the switch goes off and operates as it should
