Disco 2 Headlining removed, leaks found, what next?

so I've removed the headlining and have 2 obvious leaks., one from each sunroof. The front sunroof is coming through the winding handle and I've seen a guide for this fix.

The rear looks to be coming in via one of the plastic hoppers in the corner that has split(common issue), it then runs down the sides of the sunroof and pours out towards the back of the sunroof by the C post.

Whilst I have the headlining out should I:-

1. remove the sunroofs and fit new seals?
2. Remove sunroofs and fit new seals and lay down some sealant?
3. Leave them in situ, just seal up hopper and winder handle and see how it goes for a while?

Should I fit new seals? where's the best place to buy them? and is there a difference between genuine and aftermarket quality?

Replace both seals, so no.2 as water is entering via the faulty seal/s.
eBay has suppliers selling the glass seal, the difference will be the price.

What sealant should I use and how should I apply it?

I used a £10 a tube windscreen sealant it was rubbish had to do it all again used roof and gutter sealant about £3 each from Tool station, looks to be working fine. Mines a D1 I just totally removed the sunroofs and re fitted using the gutter sealant I also glued the glass closed using silicone, no more leaks

Pardon my ignorance however once the new seals are in place I assume that a bead of sealant is placed between the top of the sunroof and the underside of the opening?

Yes basically assuming the roof is the same as my D1
Remove the sunroof.
Clean all the old stuff off.
A little dot of oil on the screws can be helpful for removal next time
I found it easier to turn the sunroof upside down and put sealant around the lip that will be sandwiched against the roof, carefully turn it over and place in the hole, once its tightened up wipe off any excess.

You don't need new seals. The OEM LR seal is a stupid wee strip of foam rubber that is shit. Remove both sunroofs and clean the roof and sunroof so they are spotless where they meet. Give the mating surfaces a wipe with panel wipe or break cleaner. Use a good bead of Tiger Seal and refit. They will never leak again if you do it correctly. While the sunroofs are out make sure the drains in each corner are in good nick. If not, remove them and again seal back in with Tiger Seal. Make sure the drain pipes are well fitted and can't fall off. Duct tape them to the roof before refitting the headlining. Might even be a good idea to remove and seal the roofrails while you are at it.

It is unusual for the actual glass sunroof seal to leak by the way. It is almost always the sunroof to roof seal.

The drain tubes that come off the sunroof are quite a snug fit, how do you remove them without damaging the black drain hoppers?

Heat them, a hair dryer will give more than enough heat and won't cook the rubber (or your fingers) like a heat gun can!

just a quick update folks. I removed both sunroofs. Both were leaking in the front left corner where the original Landrover sealant was virtually non existant.

I cleaned the sealant off both sunroofs with a scraper and some cleaner till the surface was smooth. I then cleaned up both sunroof openings on the roof again making sure it was a clean mating surface.

Then I used polyurethane sealant(tiger seal) and laid a bead all around the underside of the sunroof. They were then placed back into the openings and the metal frame underneath was screwed back into pull the sunroofs down. I used a bit of copper slip on the screws around the frame. One of the drain channels had come loose( not broken) so I resealed it with tiger seal.

Its been a week now and I've been travelling around with no roof lining and considering we've had some heavy rain I've not got one leak so it's been a success.

Ps when taking the internal metal trays out I did not have to remove the drain channel tubes as they sat nicely supported in the car.

Just got to use some spray adhesive to remount the roof lining to the formed part and I will refit it all.
