Please help
I have a Defender 300TDI.(1997)
Side lights work, but when you select dipped lights no main lights or rear lights.
Does this point to the relay within the fuse box.

Yes, or a wire has fallen off a switch/relay...

sounds like the problem i had. see the post on 'headlamps won't turn on'. if the high beam does come on, and when you have the headlamps on dip and not even the dashboard lights are on, the switch contact melted.

remove the switch from the dash, flip it over and check the contacts. you should see all the round pin head contacts. if the one to the brown wire is missing, it melted.

Normally you can also recognize, that the plastic around the contacts has melted and covers the contacts. At least my switch was looking this way, when he stoppped working..;-)
