Morning all.

2003 TD4 Kalahari 5 door.

When I turn on my headlights the rear door unlocks. If I then switch the lights on to main beam the rear door opens as if someone had operated the latch. This could make night time driving a tiresome buiness having to stop and close the rear door all the time. Not to mention the inconvenience of losing my tools out of the back of the vehicle.

Anyone else had this happen?

Happy for others to challenge, but a look at the circuitry suggests that this is likely to be a CCU failure. Headlights connect to it and the tailgate release is driven directly from it. I think a wiring fault is extremely unlikely as the routing of the wires is different. I suppose a short circuit near the CCU is a possibility.

Have you done any recent work to the area around the CCU (behind inside fusebox) that could have caused wiring problems?

Does the lights on alarm still work with headlights on and door open??

Does the tailgate release ok from door handle?

The above would help diagnosis.
 
Hi.
Yes I've inserted a piggyback blade fuse adaptor into the left hand main beam circuit to supply a relay for the spotlights.
The lights on alarm is working correctly.
The tailgate release is working correctly.
Something else I've just noticed is the tailgate lock makes a "machine gun" type of noise when you lock the car with the remote key fob.
Is a replacement CCU expensive? :eek:
 
Yep.Removed the piggy back adaptor and replaced the original fuse. Still acting up!
I've noticed that sometimes the rear tailgate makes a noise when you unlock the car with one press. ie: just to unlock the drivers door.
It's all a bit wierd...
 
The tail door shouldn't make any noise when the vehicle is locked. In fact the tail door actuator should only receive power when the read door handle is used. The rest of the time there's no power going to the actuator at all. Unlike the 4 doors which physically lock, the tail door is always locked, only releasing when the handle switch is used. It sounds like some crossed wiring somewhere, or the CCU maybe.
 
Yes, I'm thinking the CCU maybe having a crisis.
They seem to be fairly cheap 2nd hand.
Is it very envolved just swapping it out for another?
 
OK, so here is what I know about ccu. 3 door and 5 door are different. The remote fob is programmed to the ccu so if you buy one try to get the matching fob although these can be reprogrammed. As far as I know there is no other customisation or security programming. I have a spare 3 door ccu but no fob although I can programme them to the car at a later date should you need it.

So I'll be wanting a 5 door CCU and its corresponding key fob (fobs)?
Looks like there are clips on the underside of the CCU.
Does it just unclip from the rear of the fusebox?
 
Yes, the connectors are a push fit. If you get a ccu and it solves the problem, then your fobs can be added back to the car when things get easier. You could probably manage without them for a while to solve the problem.
