i am thinking of giving my series 3 lightweight the series 2 look ie lights in the grill .any one know off hand what size hole to cut out for the lights .will make the plates with alluminium !
 
You could use the headlamp bucket as a template for the holes. I prefer the headlamp in the grill look. I'm not too sure about the legality of moving the headlamps inboard though. Regulations changed about headlamp spacing, if the car is original for the period, that's ok but retro changes are not always permitted. E.g removing seat belts to give the vehicle an older look.

Agreed, best to read the contruction and use regs regarding lights. There are some big changes in the period covering Series Land Rovers. If yours is after the cut off date for inner headlights you can still have both sets but not only the inner ones. You can fit the grill lamps as fogs/spots and leave the headlights in the wings. Be wary of blocking out too much grill, I had my reg plate on the grill, looked good, but the engine overheated, its now on the bumper.
The wings are different too, would you change those?

Technically this would make the car illegal for road use, unless you keep the lights in the wings too and add grill ones as spot lights. The Type Approval for road use would have been linked to the Construction & Use regulations for the time (nothing MoT related). Which is why Land Rover had to change the design.

In reality though, chances of it being an issue are slim, so it is all about your view to risk.
 
Any series 3 will need to have headlights in the outboard position due to the changes in the lighting regulations which specified a maximum distance from the edge of the car- effectively outlawing the older setup. You could fit both sets and have four headlamps- after 1991 you are only allowed two dipped beam lamps but older than that there's no restriction.
One idea I've seen on a series 3 campervan is to have four headlamps, the inner pair being LHD-spec for driving on the right. A switch in the cabin selects one set or the other for low beam, and all four high beams come on for extra illumination.
 
Key numbers from the 1989 Regs are:
400 mm from edge for first used on or after 1 April 1986
510 mm from the edge for first used before 1 April 1986 or manufactured before 1 Oct 1985
The 1 Oct is probably to enable the miltitary to use up vehicles already bought.
There's a 2017 amendment but it seems to be about day time running lights, automatic dips and directional headlights, rest is same as 1989.
 
i know what you mean .its a 1971 series 3 .and no one cares !it doesunt need a mot and it spends its life in the fields.but before i take them out i want to make the plates so if anyone knows the diameter please let me know & ill get a hole cutter before i start ! thanks for all the replies . reg mick
 
Could you not just remove your current headlights and bowls and use the hole left to make a template? Or buy a series 2a grill panel then sell the series 3 panel to cover your costs.
 
yes i could . but if some one knows the diameter . i can do all the prep before i start .ie get a hole cutter etc! and the grill i have got is not worth a button ! and there is no cost atall ! thanks
