SCRAP???
Stick a head gasket on it. Less than 100 quid and a weekends work.
Was told more than likely the sleeves had dropped. Just not willing to throw anymore money at it.

Unless it overheated in a major way the sleeves should be OK.

I'm no K Series expert, but I agree with Alibro, your engine is just in 'standard mode' for a K Series - needs some work for it to be running OK again. Its to be expected with K Series reasonably regularly. Plenty have have fixed their liners and HG and the engine will then run fine for many minutes (ok years) before any more problems.
