Head Gasket Problem RR p38

Hi guys, I just got my rr p38 about 5 weeks ago and it seems like the head gasket is gone because there is mayo in the oil cap and won't start when the engine in hot.

I can't afford a replacement now so I need advice on an alternative solution such as Steel Seal, K-Seal or Blue Devil Sealant. Can any of these help or any other suggestions please??? Cheers. :boom:

Be interesting to know which engine?
If diesel, hot start is a common problem and nothing to do with HGF.
Mayo can just be lots of short runs, does it use coolant?
Sealants will just give you more grief IMO when it blocks the RAD.
If you bought from a dealer, take it back.
 
I'm assuming it's a V8?

If so,
Only way to fix a failed head gasket is fit a new head gasket & establish the cause of it in the first place, has it overheated recently - check the cooling system.
Get a compression check done first. You could check the plugs for water in the cylinder.
DO NOT use K-Seal or any other 'miracle fix' to fix a HG. It wont cure a HG fail but it will feck your cooling system up which will lead to another head failure in time.
 
Mayo in rocker covers most often has nothing to do with head gasket failure. It is far more often caused by short journeys were the engine does not reach proper temp. Mayo in the rocker cover DOES NOT automatically mean H/G failure.

Better know as too much condensation and not enough heat :p
 
Seems convinced his gasket has gone because of a bit of mayo. Urban myths strike again. :);)

I probably didn't help but i do assume folks know the difference between cold running symptoms & classic HGF's.....he will probably stuff some 'cheap fix' in it anyway.

Can also be caused by bad crank case ventilation. Unless the sump oil is also contaminated forget head gasket failure with mayo.
 
Thought rr head gaskets comenly went between water and cylinder? Ive had 2 go that way

I will say again it is an urban myth that mayo in the rocker cover is a sign of head gasket failure. IT IS NOT. Bad crankcase ventilation or short journeys, were the engine does not get hot enough, for long enough, to burn off moisture drawn into the engine as it cools, in moist atmospheric conditions.
 
Hey Guys New to the forums,
To start I have a D1 which is reasonable modified which is having a similar post to the OP( which is how I found this forum). So issue is 4.6 milk cap lots of mayo in head but no sump oil or water contamination, no pressurization of water system, blows white smoke on and off not consent have water droplets coming out of exhaust when you give it a rev. I have positive air pressure coming from the pcv outlet when I disconnect the vac line from manifold. No loss of power that I can tell had HG done 5k ago when engine was fitted (milk cap from first start up was told by mechanic just moisture from washing the parts) No over heating at all takes 5 minutes to get to operating temp and sits consent at just about 1/4 temp highway or off road. get the Sloshing sound from heater core as can't seem to remove the air lock. uses minimal water that I can tell.

So Question is what is could be causing the milky cap and mayo ?
1: cracked block
2: HG (replaced when built with tin one and the copper gasket spray)
3: slipped liner
4: cracked head (heads previously didn't have this on last motor)

You can get a UV dye and put it in the water. Run it a bit and then check the dipstick with a UV torch and see if anything glows. Also, check plugs to see if any are steam cleaned.

Liner you would most likely hear ticking when hot.
 
Could just be too many short runs leading to condensation. Water droplets out of the exhaust when cold is fairly normal. If the engine is being overcooled due to a duff thermostat for example, it will increase the chance of mayo especially with a lot of short runs.
 
The 3mm hole was probably drilled as an air vent if a cheaper stat was fitted without the OEM vent.
Don't need venting on a p38 v8. Swapped out for a new one and never had an issue. Gets up to temp quick too
What the hole IS good for, is letting the coolant out when you need to drain it
 
Coolant loss is the best indicator!

Slipped liner is always accompanied with a cracked water gallery, thats what causes the liner to shrink away from the block!

Water can go 2 places.

Either Up and punch through the HG or down into the sump..

Change the Oil put UV die in the Coolant like Grrr says.

And take it for a good hard drive.

There shouldn't be any emulsion on the cap after a good drive..

If it is doing short journeys then that is a possible cause.
