Head gasket exhaust blow!

Hi guys, I thought my disco had an exhaust manifold leak but now I suspect that the head gasket has blown out at the exhaust side! What's the chance of this happening?

It sounds like a train at idle, chuff, chuff, chuff. Will a head gasket change be all it needs or is it likely to need other repairs or even worse replacement?

Head gaskets do blow and associated with other indicators, such a water running from tail pipe or coolant blowing from the expansion bottle.
The gasket between the manifold and ‘Y’ pipe failure can also be the issue, as I found out it sounds like a machine gun when accelerating.

Yes I first thought it was the manifold leaking from the sound of it so bought new gaskets, bolts etc and y pipe gaskets to fit next Saturday. But during the week the sound completely changed to a train like noise on idle. I haven't taken it past 1500rpm but the noise changes to a much harsher sound at higher rpm. I read a thread about the head gasket and to me that sounds much more likely.

Ok, but when u do a bit of preparation for removing the manifold by freeing up the nuts before hand you will maybe able to see what is what better, it could be difficult unless you drop the pipe on both sides which looks like it could be a bit of work in its self, its something that has to be done when an auto box filter is replaced if u have an auto that is.
Whats the model year of your vehicle ? Also handy to put such information on your disco in you ‘signature’ so there permanently

It's the drivers side that is blowing so will only need to remove that manifold to get a better look at it all.

Mines a 2003 4.0 V8 auto
