I do get a little piff of soke on start up, but that it.

That is valve stem seals, and they'll only get worse, may as well do them now whilst it's apart - they easy and cheap to do - if it's still apart!! ;)

Right, taken advice form my parts shop, (very good guys) The head is off for a ree skim and will be back shortly.

Valves are out ready to change the steam seals, I will then have to start the long job of ree grinding them all in.

I will let you know how I get on

If the seats are good and you putting the same valves in the same ports you needn't lap them in.

Yes Jack they are in order, I am however having the 4 exhaust valves ree cut on the edge as they are pitted, nothing that grinding them in would not get out with alot of work, I am just giving a good go while I am in there doing jobs.

Just an update, got the head and valves back today, ree done all the valves and put the new head gasket on, (as the head shim had 6thou off it I have gone to the next gasket size up) The head is in place ready to be tensioned down first thing tomorrow, followed by everything else.

Should be driving home tomorrow night.

You have stripped head down yourself but had the work done by outsiders, so whats been the cost James???
Be interesting to compare from sticking the car in and getting a garage to do it, or DIY.

So far, apart from all the tools, The head skin and re cutting the 4 exaust valves £60. The head gasket and headset was £100 plus I am sure there are a few other little bits and pieces that I had to get, lets say sundries £25

just think james you only have about 175k left befor you have to do it all again

If thats your everyday car, and thats a photo of it in your avatar, i suggest you need to get some work done on your front lawn, its a disgrace.

It would be nice if I had that much space on the front lawn, allas I have a small 3bed victorian terris with on street parking, no good for working on the car! I have to go to my parents to do it and make a mess of their drive!
