Head Gasket about to go on Discovery

Hi What are the symptons that my head gasket is about to go?

The garage have said that a pipe was bulging - see pic and the coolant level was below the line (about an inch or so) but i confess to not having topped it up regularly.

Garage have said just by looking at the pipe and the coolant level that head gasket needs replacing - would this be correct, is there not other tests they need to do first - its just had a new water pump?? I'm a girl and my car knowledge isn't great!

Its done just over 100k.

Ask them to do a chemical block test first, if this is done it will give a better indication of a head gasket if theres one going...

stuck stat, blockage in the rad or else where, these can also cause enough pressure to do that to the pipe, the pipe itself could be failing. There are a few things that can cause it. They could do a sniff test, to see if hydrocarbons are present in the cooling system, plus a pressure test to test for leaks or cracks. althou a cooling system is ment to bea completely water tight system, i surpose over time it will lose some

if its just had a new water pump and the water level aint been checked since its likely it wasnt filled and bled properly .... any air pockets trapped when it was refilled would work there way out with use and result in a drop in level. try topping it up to level, and see what happens. if the pipe is bulging it may be about to burst.
try taking the fiiller cap of in the morning when the engine is cold... if you hear the hiss of escaping gas its likely the head gasket is gone..... if the coolant isnt pressurised its ok

The garage is talking utter and complete bollocks.

Incidently, it is normal to give information such as model/year/engine type about the vehicle in question, when asking for help -we're not clairvoyant

From the picture it looks like a TD5 DII. From that picture alone and the fact that the coolant is slightly slow is way insufficent evidence of a blown head gasket. I would strongly advise you to take it somewhere else.

Common signs of head gasket failure are one or all of these:

1. Steam coming from the end of the exhaust pipe;

2. Pressurised cooling system giving bulging pipes and no coolant in the header tank;

3. Temp gauge showing into the red, on the gauge;

4. Heater only blows cold air;

5. 'Mayonnaise' like substance under the oil refill cap

6. With the engine ticking over, bubbles appearing in the coolant header tank - shows more when the engine is rev'd.

7. Using a 'sniffer' test, check for exhaust fumes in the header tank and coolant smells in the exhaust pipe.

8. Change/loss of engine power.

If having checked all these a blown head-gasket was diagnosed, I would be more to consider the possibility.

Truth is they either don't know what they are doing, or they are having you on, or they did more tests than you have spoken about?

Touting for work and unless you want to treat them as your pet charity find another garage.

Check for symptoms listed above and report back on here.......then IF you need a garage at least you with be well armed with information and make a much less easy target

Tell them to go forth and multiply, do as has been previously suggested by others but please be advised that some garages grossly overcharge women drivers/owners. P.S. To introduce thi'sen is always polite in mixed company.
