No stranger to a old Ford head gasket...but what tools are required for a 2.5 bmw engine...any tips most welcome....

Torque wrench, angle tightening gauge, cam setting tool, timing pin. Decent socket set and spanners. Follow the staged re-tightening instructions to the letter. Always fit a three hole gasket.

Got most tools....trust my Chinese torque wrench to.break as soon as I wound it up to torque setting...I've screen shot a old post of yours wammers for the actual parts needed....any recommendations on shops for the parts....as my local stockists are britpart mad...

Get a good gasket and fit new head bolts. Have a look at Island 4x4 the Reinz stuff is ok. That is what i used when i did mine. You will also need a head set if you are doing stem seals and such. Pretty pointless taking head off and not doing a valve job at same time.

And you are supposed to replace the camshaft sprocket bolt - I assume it's a stretch bolt of some sort.

It is recommended, but i did not change mine. It is angle tightened but not by a great amount.

I considered re-using, but figured that for a few quid I would prefer to know that it's not going to come loose!

Torquing to 15 lb ft then angle tightening 35 degrees takes care of that. It's a fairly chunky bit of kit stretching it would take some doing. This Bolt - Genuine Land Rover at www.rimmerbros.co.uk or STC4183 none EGR.

Just said that to Mrs...lol...before I logged in..could be cheaper to swop the engine lol...shame the bmw330 d don't just slot in ..I'll see if island4x4 has the genuine bits as there my local shop..

Found A man with a engine for sale ,52k on it ...speaking to him today ,hopefully cheaper than buying all the bits n pieces...engine in and out could well be a lot cheaper option...if the guy don't want too much for the m51...

Forget it then ...was only asking has there is so many makes of gasket and bolts....just wanted to get the good ones rather then the bad ones...

Do you really need the bmw special tools to get the cylinder head off??

You need the tool to remove tension from the cam chain and a pin to hold it off tension. You need special tools to time the cam when you replace head.
