Entertainng thougts along similar lines but will gut the EWP and replace with standard hoses. Glad I kept my **** tyres now, the BFG's are still worth quite a bit second hand.

I can't believe I'm thinking this. There must be a solution!!!!

Are you going to re tighten the bolts? Never done this on a K series myself but seems significant that you and DD felt they were not done up sufficiently.

increase it ,what have you got to lose ,no you shouldnt but its all engineering ,you just dont know which part isnt right ewp , head, liners, bolts ,block, poor gasket ,poor rad cap etc

Yes it's all a bit of an unknown. You have to be a bit of a detective :).

Well I'm not expert (thought certianly getting well versed in all things Hippo) but DD has 25 years experience with dozens of marques as a master diagnostic technician so I generaly believe what he says ;) - unless he says it was the gremlin's idea.

At the end of the day the engine is bascially annoyingly fragile as it is, we will try torquing the bolts up a bit more, if it works then hurray if it doesn't then I'll look into putting a lower mileage rover lump in, only a day's work really.

Will.

Keep us posted Dude.

Also weighing up the financial ramifications now. It's starting to look like I might be better off getting it as good as I can and selling up. It's given me too much arse for me to forgive it anything else now.

Here's a thought, I'm the eighth owner of this 9 year old Hippo, now that's always struck me as fishy but I've put it to the back of my mind.

Could it simply be that this was a ****e engine out of the factory and it'll never be any good? Perhaps a no HGF low mileage Rover lump would sort it? Could I sell the old engine for scrap, how much can you get for them?

Well, if you really feel this way, then you need get shot for sanity. I was chatting to my Bro today about his car - we don't talk cars cos he not interested. He has owned an Audi V6 (2.8 or maybe 3 litre) for nearly 10 years and he admitted that in all that time he has never changed the plugs or leads. Has had tyres, brakes, clutch, suspension bits and bobs, cat, a couple o wheel bearings, cam belt. The one thing he does do is regular oil changes. I've driven it recently and It pulls like a fooking starship!:)

I'd still like to stick with LR, but will probably be a D1 or D2 - can't afford a TD4 as nice as my SE :(. I dunno, I really need to have a proper think. The engine bushes are guffed too by the sound of it as it's fooking loud, even if I welded up me OE manifold and got a genuine back box for it that's a lot of backache just to shut it up a bit. At 70 the noise is unbearable. I don't even take it that fast any more because of the danger of gas ingress.

It's a **** engine, absolute lemon - but the rest of the car is beautiful. This is agony!

it sounds to me, that it could well be the liners. yu said they were "not very proud". what measurement did you get?
did yu clamp them, as recommended?.
you didnt turn the engine did you, with the head off?

By a process of elimination, what isnt known to be good?

I agree mate I suspect the liners are goosed. Tbh they were basically flush with the block, maybe one or two microns above or some useless twittery.

Didn't turn it over, was under strict guidance for DD !

liners are, to the best of my knowledge a no-no.... or, at least, not cost effective to replace.

It is a pity, but I dont believe that it lends itself to top hat linering, either :(.

yu have to decide, how much more money do you want to throw at it?

None.

But I'm going to have to aren't I. D1 will feel too primitive and D2 will cost too much to run - not to mention TD5 repair costs.

nothing more primitive than a motor on axle stands with its bonnet open. D1's a fairly comfy - and easy motor to work on.

You speak the truth :). For the money I could get for the Hippo I could get a stellar D1 I suspect, yeh it would probably need a bit of welding but welding is time rather than money it seems to me :).
