Hi all i have just had the message HDC SYSTEM UNAVAILABLE flash up on the dash and the car wouldn,t start while it was on.I took the key out of the docking port and put it back in and all was fine.Anyone else had this message and what could it be.Thanks

The battery is likely past it's best. The same message comes up on the Discovery 3 when the battery is about to fail.

it could be low yes i do a lot of short runs at the moment although it had a decent run on sunday morning. If i put my battery charger on it will it be ok to leave the leads on the battery as i will be charging it on the car ??

If your charger is under 10 Amps then you can leave the battery connected to the car. Make sure you connect the leads to the battery, before switching on the wall socket. ;)

Had the battery checked this morning and all was good but he did tell me the battery could do with upgrading as the one thats on will struggle to get 70 amps out of it and i would be better with a 12" 90 amp battery buthe sells batterys he is gonna say that .Going back years ago when i first started driving diesel motors i was told they needed a heavy duty battery on them.Whats your thoughts thanks ????

I think he was talking of the Ah rating, which is how much charge it will hold. The more important rating for starting heavy diesels is the CCA.

Charge the battery fully, leave it to settle overnight, or for a few hours, then disable the fuel pump and crank the engine while measuring battery voltage - shouldn't drop below 9.5V.

Start the engine, and check the alternator is putting out a good 14.4V. Switch on every electrical accessory and check this doesn't drop too much. You might need to rev to a fast idle.

Also, clean up the terminals, earth strap etc.

@Joe_H was very good at this sort of thing, but I haven't seen him on here for a while.

The voltage on cranking needs to hold at over 10 volts on the FL2 and other LRs with terrain response. If the voltage drops under 10 volts, the "HDC failure, special programmes cancelled" message is displayed on the dash. I believe this is some issue with the TR ECU when operated at low voltages.
So the higher the CCA, the better.
I fitted my D3 with a battery capable of supplying around 1000 CCA. This held the cranking voltage at 11 Volts, which was perfect.

so i,m looking for a 1000 cca battery yes ???

Oops, didn't spot it was a FL2. If your battery's fairly new and tests OK you might be wasting your money. Best to load check as above and perhaps look elsewhere for the fault.

For example, the battery in my Td5 Defender is a Delphi, and is 15 years old. I think it's the original.

I don't think a 1000 CCA battery will fit in the battery tray. But the battery required needs to be as powerful as possible in the space available. It's well worth testing the voltage under cranking to see if that's the problem. There's no point spending on a larger battery, if the fault is with a bad earth terminal.

If you do a Google search. You'll find that FL2s with flat batteries are rather common.
whats are the maximum dimensions of a battery.I,m finding the larger amp and larger cca batterys are 335mm in length 175mm W and 190mm H will these fit.Looking at the battery tray they look a bit long ????

You'll need to measure the battery tray to see what will fit.
