hawse or roller fairlead

to the OP, yes, you can use a hawse fairlead with a steel wire - I do. It must be a steel fairlead. An aluminium one will be very quickly destroyed by a steel cable.

This link states that "The black unit is good for use with wire or synthetic rope on winches with a 4,000 lb. (1815 kg) pull capacity or greater. "

make your own decision!

Thanks for that a nice clear unbiased answer. if a winch company as good as warn sell them for wire then thats good enough for me.

Yes certainly I think the Marlow dynaline is different to the dyneema. Is the Marlow plasma rope whereas the dyneema is, well, dyneema?!

Tbh I don't know if plasma is just a household name.

Winch-it are selling 100ft dyneema and alloy hawse on eBay for 160. That's what I bought.

It had melted where the heat protection had slipped and the rope contacted the drum. That was my mistake, I shall avoid that in future.

Honestly stu even with a cheapo dyneema you won't look back, it's great stuff, so much easier - no dangerous breakages, no wire splinters, easy to work with, repairable, and lighter too up front.

Cheers :)
i had 2 of those ropes (blue ones) of winchit the 1st one snapped after 1 month and the 2nd sufferd very badly from uv damage and general wear i ended up putting on the rear of me 90 in the end and then sold the 90 anyway.

yes £400 is alot but not when ya replace the rope twice.

but yes any plasma dyneema will be safer and in my opinion more user friendly than any wire rope

ermmmm thank you for that thats problerly where the reports of easy damage come from the normal Dyneema, as the ones that buy the cheaper ones may ask a little too much of it.

i agree

i knew when i was buying a rope, comp hook AND fairlead for 160 i was going to be getting a cheap rope.

but for me, who hardly uses the disco and even less uses the winch, i figured buying anything dearer was daft.

i wanted to cut down on the weight for lugging it up hills etc, and also wanted the safet aspects from breakages and splinters.

we are very careful to look after it when we use it, so it should last me quite some time.

looking at the challenges in the mags etc, i cant see how my rope would putup with the sort of abuse you see the comp trucks getting put through.

cheers :)

true but for the odd p+p and general useage they will last a period of time.

but mine into a punch challenge lasted 1 hr into the event

was that because it was being very heavily worked with a gigglepin 8274 yanking on the end of it, or because you were working it round trees/rocks etc?

or a mixture of both?

im just trying to work out if my average superwinch 10000 wont have the power to snap it, or if i just need to be axtra careful not to damage it on things.

cheers :)

it was when doin a right angle winch of a tree uphill and using 2 snatch blocks,it wasnt the power of the winch it was the weight of the vehicle combined with extreme gradient that caused the break

they put the punch cards in stoopidly aquakward places

Decided to go for synthetic rope, have not made up my mind which yet, money has a bearing on that. Do i keep the wire in case I might need it later or sell and put the money towards the new rope. If i sell what could i get for it 100ft of 9.4mm with hook. Its brand new not out the box yet.
