Has anyone seen/got a decent roof tent?

I'm looking to get a roof tent and rack for a 90 for a trip to Morocco and Iceland plus European touring. Has anyone got any recommendations which companies to look at? I missed all the land rover shows so wonder if anyone that attended has seen any that looked good. I don't want to spend thousands as some advertised in LRO or LRM. Cheers
 
I have a Howling Moon 1.4 with the annexe. It's very nice, and very expensive. I bought it secondhand though with almost no use at all so I got a good bargain.

Before the bargain came up I was looking at a Tuff-trek TT-02 http://tuff-trek.com/soft-top-tents.html again with the annexe. These were coming in at about £1300 I think all told new, and were apparently almost as strong and as well built as the Howling moon one. I would personally be happy with either myself. If you want an excuse to make a trip up to Leeds you can have a look at the tent if you want.

we got ours last year (just in time for billing) from Armadillo. We got the base version because we also bought an oztent rv2 at the same time. Our lad has the rooftent & we stay in the oztent. I did sleep in this once but it's a bit disorienting waking up in the middle of the night with a belly full of ale and negotiating a ladder for a p155. Seems ok, it looks the same as the tuff trek tt01. Armadillo do this as part of a modular system too.

I've a Hannibal and it's unbelievable.picked it up used for 650. They're easy to put up and I've rigged up a funnel and hose system for peeing at night to save me climbing down the ladder.

They were on my look at list as well - I wasn't entirely sold with the non awning style as I wanted a nice place to stand up in to change, cook etc. I have to say though most of the tents follow the same design - it's all down to the quality of the materials used and the durability I think. The Tuff Trek stuff just seemed to work and the sales staff let us poke around some examples and prat about with it. I still feel a bit guilty for not buying it as they were ace at customer services.
 
Although they seem to have stopped selling RTTs, the bottom end of the market is here, in my opinion. Top end is (arguably) Hannibal. I've used both and there's no doubt that there's a significant difference between the two. Lots in between. The only way to decide what you want to pay for the quality you get is to go to the shows and check and/or search online for folks' opinions. From experience, I'd say the cheaper end of the market is good for the occasional use that UK-based campers might need - say 4 or 5 weeks a year - but are noisy in a wind, have cheaper fittings like zips and suffer from condensation. They are generally lighter. The other end of the scale is best for "proper" expeditions in harsh environments, are more comfortable and will last a lot longer but with a weight and cost penalty. You pays your money....

I've used Mikescuba's "solution" as well. I wouldn't recommend it but clearly it IS an easy set-up to achieve on a budget. It also only works in warm, dry environments for a day or two at a time. That's why they're designed the way they are - single skin and disposable, almost. We used one for a few days to see how we would like roof-top sleeping. We weren't put off, so maybe that's an endorsement for the Cheap-and-Cheerful option but I wouldn't like to test it in a full-on Saharan blow or a Pyrenean thunderstorm....:)

It depends on his vehicle situation. He sold his old Discovery and bought a 90 which he is now selling and looking for another Discovery.

on the Sunday 25th March, Taking the ferry Monday 26th March. Its the Easter week. 1st April is Easter Sunday.

You will be able to see how great my roof tent is.

Thank you for the invitation, I will read the blog and check those dates with work but I don't think it will be a problem as it's Easter. Meeting at a campsite would be excellent as I'll need to drive across from Slovakia where I have my Defender. I have a 90 that i'd probably take as I don't think i'll have my 110 fully rebuilt by then

Depending which route you will be taking from Slovakia you might end up almost going pass me. I live in the middle of the triangle between Lyon, Roanne and Clermont Ferrand. See how things work out, keep an eye on the Morocco Thread for up dates. I will post the route on there as soon as its been worked out. If your up for it add a note on the Morocco thread. I'm sure we will get a few more and some will drop out.

I'm very interested! I will have a read when I get home on Monday as I'm currently travelling and only have my phone. I should be able to prepare the 90 by then. I'm gradually getting through all of the bits that need doing

OK, we have found the official tour guide. That's you by the way.
I would like to do the Plage Blanche which looks interesting, Anything else I'm open to suggestions. Last time we spent a bit of time in the forest and in the Atlas mountains which was interesting.

To be honest deep down it was a shame he had to use a good 110 roof.

My friend has the same attitude as you he uses a sub £20 pop up tent on a sheet of trailer board he has fixed to his roof rack, if he is stuck for space on the way home he just bins the tent.
