Series 3 Has anyone got a 2 1/4 diesel engine to spare?

So, as I mentioned in this thread, I have a knackered engine. That is, Old Smoky does. I am now on the lookout for an engine to refurbish. My local Land Rover wizard, Ground Zero 4WD, has contacted several suppliers in the UK, and I thought I'd give them a helping hand. If anyone has a standard diesel engine, as recent as possible and, above all, suitable for reconditioning, please send a PM this way.

Old Smoky is a 88" 1977 truck cab, which means a 2 1/4 diesel 'stove'. The current burner is a 3 bearing, so this is obviously the #1 priority, but I assume a 5 bearing would be possible. I am not an originality taliban, but I like to keep things simple and as near original as possible.

Should you be the guardian angel in this case, I will forward your contact details to Ground Zero 4WD, who will contact their chosen supplier, AB 4x4 Cleveland Ltd, who will take over from there.
 
Can't help with an engine as I have now "left the fold" after best part of 40 years running series I've parted with the spares. When you find an engine be sure to check out the hotspots in the cylinder head. When they make a bid for freedom the damage can scrap the engine.
 
My diesel 2 1/4 3-bearing is about to be changed back to the original military 5-bearing petrol, so the diesel will be available afterwards. It does smoke a bit but my guru tells me the engine is as sound as a pound and a diesel engineer who listened to it said, "There's absolutely nothing wrong with that engine." Perhaps just needs pump or injectors? There are three or four people interested, but no-one has made an offer yet.

I have no idea how much to offer, since I am only acting as some sort of go-between here. I would have to pass on your details to my garage, who'd get in touch with AB4x4 which, I assume. would be the ones making the offer. Should this be okay for you, feel free to PM me your contact details!

Too late, hence the reason for trying to obtain a new engine...
 
So, I have ordered a new engine, read: remanufactured. Expensive? Yes. But I did not buy this car just to send it to the scrap yard... funnily enough, SWMBO thought it was a good idea to get Old Smoky a new engine. But, she has two horse-shaped financial black holes, so... ;)

So why not try a bit of lateral thinking . Take the old engine out and hitch the horses up to Old Smoky and away you go . You will now have doubled the horse power of your Land Rover !
 
This is annoying as when I bought mine, the guy I bought it off offered me a 2.25 Diesel engine for free if I wanted to swap from petrol.

Just had nowhere to put it. Sorry. That said I doubt you’d want to pay the shipping to Sweden.

If the guy still has it, he could always sell it to Turner. I would most certainly have paid the shipping, but I would have had it remanufactured in the UK first. As it happens, the cost of shipping it to Sweden isn't a financial nightmare, I think the crate might be more expensive than the shipping costs! :D
 
Best used as a small boat mooring. Or. You must have within a 20 mile radius an independent landy dealer/ scrappy. They are not good engines. The block is the same as a petrol it’s the fuel system that’s dinasaur. Get a petrol 2.25 or 2.5l. Then you’ll pass emissions tests easier, better and simpler maintenance and faster.
 
Emissions tests are not an issue over here... believe it or not. Old Smoky is 42 years old, so all the MoT people do is to have a shufti at the exhaust (read: stare in disbelief) and then tick the "passed" box. Well, that is, the "emissions test passed" box. The remaining boxes are a different matter... First time I had it tested after buying it (in 2016... first MoT in 12 years), the print on the protocol was more red than black :D

Nowt wrong with a proper diesel. I have no complaints at all from my series diesel engine. Not that I should have looking at its age.
