Well mine doesn't have any issues. This system seems to have worked well for 32 years on my Landy. Only a daft person would change it because they can't be bothered to get it set it up correctly. I'll admit its a bit crude by modern methods, but it works and doesn't require electrics. :)
 
How have you decided its the stem oil seals? If there is loads of smoke it probably isn't just the stem seals. I've spent loads of time chasing round the engine to stop smoke and in my experience u'll be lucky if it is just the seals.

When do you get the smoke and what colour?
 
Also check the prechambers, they often get dislocated, producing a ratling noise and lots of smoke. They should be sticking out of the head by 0.6 mm. When running too long with dislocated chambers, you will ruin the engine.
