Harman Kardon speakers

2005 2.5 L V6 Hi. Does anyone know a cheaper source of replacement speakers and sub (merged) woofer please? The genuine parts are still available from Rimmer Bros and LrParts but the cost is more than I paid for the vehicle.

Use replacements that fit in the holes. The door speaker holes can accommodate a standard 6 1/2" driver. I've fitted JVC replacements in my SE, which cost almost nothing compared to the HK stuff.

The sub is more of a problem, as I suspect the driver isn't available without the enclosure, and the enclosure is silly money.

I suspect yoi could find a replacement driver that fits the enclosure, but it won't work as well as the original.

My SE didn't come with the HK system, so I added a subwoofer to my FL1 by installing a large sub driver into the cubby and making a wooden baffle board for it. It sounds amazing, but does make the cubby useless for storing the jack.

Hi Nodge. How do you know which wires to use to drive a new sub? The plug in the 'wet safe' has 4 wires. Are 2 for 12v feed to a seperate amp?

No. The sub uses a duel voice coil driver. So the 4 wires (+ and - for each channel) are from the amp under the passenger seat.

Cheers Nodge. I've got the driver out of the enclosure, the cone is ripped all the way around. It's only a 6.5" unit with the letters L3D950 printed on the back. Are these available seperately do you know? Or can you recommend a different 2 coil 6.5" bass driver? Thanks again for the JVC idea, trying to find just 'component' speakers is hard though.

If the coils are working, then it's possible to replace the damaged surround. It's a fiddly job, but is the cheapest and most likely way to give satisfactory results.

There are duel coil 6.5" speakers about like the Pyle PLPW6D, but obviously the enclosure isn't designed for them, which will be very detrimental to the sound output.

If you can post some good photos of the enclosure with measurements, then I can work out the design and so what driver will work the best.
Or replace the damaged surround, which would be my preferred opinion.

Here's a pic of the old driver. Not much different to the Pyle driver. How bad could the sound be? The enclosure is nothing special just an L shaped box. I would be keen on trying to mend the surround, but again I cannot find a kit for a 6.5" bass driver . Cheers again Nodge, this is awesome help.

Speakers are a really complex thing. Each speaker is different and a complex set of parameters are applied to them, these are known as Thiele-Small Parameters.

Forgive me for asking nodge tbh i think i have already asked you this, my memory is not what it once was

but is there a reason why you have put the sound deadening on the outside and not inside the door skin

There's already a sound deadening mat on the door skin. I simply added a layer of closed cell neoprene to the inner door panel to reduce resonance from the speaker and road noise.

Is the mat already there or did you add that ? sorry for what seems like a daft question but i have never had my door panels off ,at least fingers crossed not until next summer

I had the same issue with my sub/speaker outer rim being completely ripped away from it's frame. I ended up removing the speaker from the enclosure and taking it to my local music store. They were able to source a replacement 6.5inch dual coil driver that would roughly match the original speaker's size and specifications (professional assumptions were made about the impedance and wattage of the speaker). I simply soldered the wires and connectors over and drilled the screw holes to fit the new speaker into the enclosure. Worked perfectly.

Also had the same issue. One tip don't try and fit the Discovery 3/RR Sport sub-woofer as that doesn't work well, luckily they are cheap from eBay. In the end, I ordered a Pyle PLPW6D for the princely sum of £9.24 from Thompsons. Arrived today, simple swap and to my untrained ear it's excellent.

Thanks, I've gone down this route myself. It's just taking some time to arrive (NZ) Unfortunately I also have amp/crossover issues and the feckin door speakers have got no feed to them.
