Hi All,
I have a weird noise that developed over time in my 2003 Td5 facelift manual.

It comes and goes with the revs, with the manual gearbox in neutral or in gear, standing still as well as driving. I don't hear it in idle and in high revs. It sounds a bit like something is rubbing but not like metal on metal. I can't hear it in the engine bay but hear it clearly inside and even feel it a bit. The engine is running perfectly and the car drives fine but this noise is driving me nuts as I just don't know what it can be.

My apologies for the vague description

Thanks, but the car does it while standing still.

What is all moving when the gear is in neutral? Noise in the clutch bearing should change with engagement of the clutch I think?

Not very unpleasant but to rule it out you should remove the drive belt and test rev it so to see if it's also there or not... before that see if there's any play in the crank pulley maybe... better be there than a play in the DMF

Cheers, will get the belt off first as I have had the ACE pump dying on me a while ago (it burned out as it had no oil). I did also put in a new tensioner in not so long ago.
So I really want to rule that all out indeed.

If you do that and the noise is gone check every pulley for axial play, can't you record that noise and attach it here?

I can get the noise properly recorded but my alternator decided to stop working yesterday. So I started the engine without the belt and pronto the noise was gone.

How do I proceed to find what is causing the noise? I have a hunch that the belt might be a but too tight.

I felt all the pully's and they seem to have no play and run fine in their bearings.

A noisy belt is usually because it's too slack and slipping.
If all the pulleys feel good, spinning freely without binding and no apparent sideways movement then I'd change the belt and see (or hear) how it goes.
And I'd get to alternator sorted out too.
Alternator has been replaced yesterday, what a pig of a job. LOL

I will try another belt as that is cheap and easy.

I was contemplating on a new water pump, I have no idea when it was replaced last.
with which interval do they need to be replaced?

I'm not sure there is a recommended replacement interval for the water pump, in general, I tend to do them anyway when cam belts are done, even if not cambelt driven.

There isn't one.

Only three things can go wrong with a water pump.
The shaft seal wears so the pump leaks, coolent can be seen dripping from underneath the pump.
The shaft bearing can fail, the noise along with a wobbling pully with leave no doubt of that.
And rare but has be known the pumps impeller can become detached which will be noisy.
