I have an issue with starting when my diesel gets around 1/4 or less. It will first start but immediately shut down and require a long cranking until eventually picking up. This is after car has been sitting for a few hours.

I have due to other issues rebuild some, a new set of injectors, vdo fuel pump, regulator and fuel system cleaned up, new return valve, filter replaced... the only thing not eplaced is the filterbracket itself. I cannot really locate where this issue come from, why apparently fuel sips back to tank and leaves sir in system... maybe

Check the fuel cap and fuel tank vent tubes are venting ..

Probably, I don't know TD5 specifically, just that caps are a problem and that most tankes also have a separate vent of some kind .. ;)

Had this not with my p38 diesel but with my MG ZT diesel bmw engine, cause was full pump struggling to lift fuel when ever fuel tank dropped to 1/4 or below, other MG members found tank vent blockage causes same problem as Paul D said earlier

My fuel pump is brand new and working great so I am leaning towards the valve disintegrated in the filter housing. Now as my fuel is really low I tried letting the fuel pump work til it stops (like 10sek) when turning on the ignition before cranking. Then it starts immediately and runs all normal. Fuel pump working as it should but something is letting the fuel to drain back to tank overnight i guess. I replaced the replaceable return valve in the filter housing twice, but the orange one is not to be bought separatelyt, therefore I decided to replace the complete housing.

Yeah the air bleed valve. It was shot so that helped a little. But I think its the other valve in the housing that is also shot. Yeah, I have genuine washer and o rings in there. Have used both mid priced and genuine with good results.

update to this one, I have received a new filter housing but havn't had time to install it yet. I'll give an update when that's done. But it seems like it's working fine as long I let the pump spin for one rotation if the fuel goes below 1/8

filter housing valves, white non return and orange flappy etc
just change whole thing its easier!

Yeah i replaced the white one before and also find the orange one for sale but my housing is pretty coroded so I thought I replace the whole thing since I hear there can be other air leak spots available when the corosion hits the edge of the sealing district.
