Hi All, got myself a Defender a few weeks back and got rid after a week and a half of ownership, £500 down on the deal :-( It did however get me hooked on the Land Rover Marque and now have a Discovery 1 1998 3 door in white which I have fallen deeply in love with. There are however a couple of points I'm a wee bit concerned over, A clunk sound when going over any bump / pothole, I'm guessing shockers may be to blame or at least the bushes, A vibration usually around 1500 rpm under accelaration, is it best to check prop shafts first? The car can give a Kangaroo type movement if that makes sense at certain speeds, usually about 25-30 mph.
I've had a bad run with vehicles of late and this is my last hope for a while and hope some of these problems have an easy fix for members here to advise me on.
Does anyone know of any not overly challenging green lanes etc in Perthshire?

clunk sounds like a frame ball joint

I had the vibration and kangaroo effect on my rangerover,the kangaroo feeling was most noticable at lower speeds and under load such as accelarating up a hill,it seemed to clear at about 30mph.It turned out to be one of the joints on the front propshaft.Its easy to get under it and check,park on flat ground and chock the wheels properly first as its better to check it with the handbrake off.

The "clunk" is your brain rattling around inside your dome. Getting rid of a Defender after a week and a half...WTF was wrong with it??? and if it was that bad, Why did you buy it in the first place?

Probably the shock going from ordinary motors to a Landy

Could the kangaroo thing be transmission shunt, mine can do quite badly going over speedbumps, i just adjust my driving style to live with it, i can do it at any speed just by lifting the throttle a little at a constant speed.

As said, clunk could be A-frame joint also check rear chassis/body mounts, rear floor rubbers(mine were all missing) shocks, all nylon/rubber bushes.

Spot on Dave, it was a major shock and a rash purchase, as my daily vehicle it was too noisy, windy, wet, wobbly etc, etc, the only good thing was I couldn't hear SWMBO moaning about it over the cabin noise, buy boy, did I hear her when we were out of it!!
The Disco fits the bill very well and thanks to all for advice, I'll get her checked over by a local chap I trust and pass on all ideas from here.

He he, i used to have series landys so a disco is bliss compared but i still want another

Get the cambelt done for peace of mind unless you are 100% certain and have proof of when it was last done, they can go at the most inappropriate times and usually leave a trail of bent bits behind them.

And keep it serviced as per schedule, they take a little more TLC than modern motors.

Good point on the cam belt and one I had overlooked, no need to worry about vibrations on a stationary vehicle, will book her in , is it a very expensive job on this engine? 300 tdi.
Had her in the mud and skidded down an icy tar hair pin bend, scary with a Very steep drop of 2-3 hundred feet if you don't go round Got traction and dropped to low ratio in 2nd, no probs

I did my cambelt myself, i would guess it to be around £200 or so at a garage nut thats only a guess.

It's even hotter in sao Paulo

I've ordered the belt now from paddocks and an a frame ball joint and get the prop shafts etc checked when it's in.
It's been baltic here (North Perthshire) The road is the Glen Quaich to Kenmore road, a must do if your ever in the area, there are a lot of bits round here that don't get the sun on the ground until about March now, this particular corner was a very steep descent and about a 150 degree corner with running water which froze solid overnight, just ice over most of the road surface. Pity my camera recently died as the pics would have been amazing.
