hello all ...

could anyone please advise me on roof racks... i have done several hours surfing about and simply cant decide between Hannibal, Patriot and Survivor Aluminium Roof Racks ... I have a 90xs and would like a rack that is as low profile/stream lined as poss... i will need to stand on it etc etc ... the cost is not to much of a problem... it would be nice to be able to remove it with ease other than that i just want it to look the nuts as i love my landy more than my wife .. james

You have a 90 and you want a "stream lined" roof rack, The 90 has the airflow of a brick:rolleyes:

If cost isnt a problem then try Nene Overland :D

Also, I do quick and cheap divorces if the wife is a problem !!!!!:rolleyes:
 
I've got the full length Patriot rack on my 110DC with the two rear access ladders and I have been delighted with it.

It's extremely well made, spreads the load nicely down the gutters and is VERY strong (Should have seen the tree branch I snapped off accidently with it last year - Not a mark).

Rear ladders are worth having for access.

Patriot also do a nice line in light brackets (fitted but not in use yet), work light brackets etc.

thankyou all for your advice ... looks like patriot is the way ahead for now would still like to here from someone who has a hannibal.... james...

p.s im holding fire on the divorce lawyers for now .... may be i will just bungee the wife to the new rack and enter an under ground carpark !!
 
Ang on! Got a Survivor full length roof rack on my 110 and it's a beaut. Come half way through Africa with me and while the Landy is busy rusting away (especially the rear cross member!!)... the roof rack is an absolute star! Love it, best thing I bought. bought it from Tim and Clare at Trekoverland.
 
Jumpjim's looks nice though (if very clean!)

Dirty photo of mine used and abused below. You can have it flat or with the front (or back) surround as I went for.

PS. Jumpjim. Being seeing you here in Africa anytime soon?

Sure would like to...Couple of problems

a) The wife
b) The Kids
c) The mortgage

Subject to those I would be down there tomorrow.

If the industry calms down a bit I might take a look at some unpaid stand-down for a couple of months and go walkabout for a bit.

Still slowly accruing bits....Fridges next..Any advice? The Engels look nice.
 
Have you seen the superb new Storm roof rack?

This will soon be a market leader, very versatile, low, strong, flat bed, and has far greater fixing abilities for a host of accessories than the Hannibal, Patriot and Survivor. It's so unique there is an International Patent applied for it.

Hey and now it's 2009 ! :D

Obviously the spam roof rack is crap, no support rail along the mounting points. :p

The point of reviving this thread is just to say if you are buying a second hand patriot rack, make sure some pillock hasn't stripped all the allen key bolts holding the luggage rail on :doh:

Cause I bought a probably 5 year old patriot rack on flea bay, and when I came to remove the luggage rail I found some wally had stripped all the allen key bolts. I drilled them all out, but if I had noticed when I bought it I could have knocked some money off the price.

Otherwise it's a brilliant Roof Rack !
 
I've had a mates Patriot rack. He rolled his 90, bending the rack mounting brackets. We managed to get a replacement set from Patriot free of charge. Customer service is excellent, and the rack itself is very strong, but the fundamental flaw is the fact that most of the aluminium is tapped, for steel bolts. The resulting dissimilar metal corrosion caused all the bolts to become stuck. The bolts are made of butter and rounded off. Drilling them out to replace was a bugger. If Patriot designed the rack to be held together with nuts and bolts through drilled holes, instead of just bolts into tapped holes, there wouldnt be a problem.

If you're building a brand new patriot rack, I'd use some coper greae, and add it to your "tinkering list" once yearly...
