So I'm going to replace my handbrake cable tomorrow evening, my local motor factor tells me there are two listed under my reg- 1150mm and 953mm, a bit of digging tells me the 953mm is LA953630 onwards, presumably 300tdi on. Now, my 90 is 200tdi but someone swapped in a 300tdi engine at some point and I'm fairly sure I have a fully cable operated handbrake, not rod type, was the changeover from rod to full cable at the same point as 200 to 300tdi, therefore do I need the shorter cable?

you need the direct cable in that it goes straight into rear of hand brake back plate which is 300 tdi or la onwards 700 tdi and prior cable goes to a bracket on side of t/box, part number is stc1530 also spb0006
