Hi,
I'm looking at getting a cheap winch as I can't afford much these days, and as I was on eBay I found some hand winches, They say two tonne rating, but just wondering whether that's enough? And if anyone has any experience with using these?
I'm not gonna be out using it every weekend, would simply be once or twice a year. Oh I have a '94 300tdi discovery with no mods.
 
Tifor hand winch -i need to sort something out as 2 ratchet straps to get dead disco on lorry is a bitch.
 
That 2 ton rating. It that one of those cons which really means it can pull 2 ton on the flat, but in reality it can only lift 150kg?
 
Well I don't have a clue really.... I'm not intending to my lifting my disco... Just help it if it gets a wee bit stuck. Plus I'm not really intending to go through massive pools of mud etc, just incase I get stuck out greenlaning as there arent many other people that I know who own a 4x4 (and are willing to go off road) so need summit to help me get it out myself.
 
Ok... I bought a 2 tonne puller from ebay about 18 months ago... It sat in the boot for over a year... When I got horrendously stuck, it was worth its weight in gold... We had to use it a several intervals to pull the front end up a bank to enable us to winch the mota back straight... Mine was about
 
For what it's worth I'd recommend buying a high lift jack ( and learn to use it properly/safely) rather than a hand winch.


Why?


Because not only can you use the high lift jack to lift the vehicle they also make very good winches ;)

They are fairly straight forward to miss use :rolleyes:

Which is why I said learn the safe use of, but then even a hand winch can be dangerous if miss used so don't be put off by that.

Your thinking that the winch has a cable which will do on its own. :(

You will need ropes and strops as extras to the High Lift Jack, but then again you should have those anyway if you're ever considering recovering yourself or other vehicles.

Also as I pointed out before your hand winch wont lift your vehicle ;)
 
Been thinking about this winch over night and it's a good idea. My initial caution when seeing it was due to seeing cheap ones, that can only lift 150kg or there abouts. Thats the same rough strain needed to pull a 2 ton vehicle, on a smooth flat level surface, but they rate it at 2 ton which is a trick. The ebay winch listed above is much betterer than the cheap con type, from reading more about it.
