Right

Not such a gentle days lanes has left my IIa lightweight with a shagged cross member and no 4wd  Initially thought it was a 1/2 shaft but I did the following.

engage 4wd, prop turns slightly but not much (confirms 4wd engaged)
jacked front left, spun wheel, prop does not turn.
jacked front right, spun wheel, prop dont turn.
am i doing something wrong? jacked rear right wheel, rear prop turned so assume not.

Have i blown the front diff?

G

*serves my right for having a V8 in a lightweight

maybe snaped both 1/2 shaft at the same time
i know its a very long shot but you might get lucky
but i would drain the oil first aswell as you gota drain it to get diff out for halk shaft anyway

With a half shaft broken nothing turns the diff just free wheels, gona have to take the diff out probably anyway if its broke the shaft at the diff end and to get any broken bits out.

On trucks if you spin a wheel back and forwards you can just about feel the diff spinning, or if the shafts broken you might hear it rattling, if you were to power it up it would try to drive the good side slightly but the broken halfshaft side would remain deadly still.

hmmm, just read on the lightweight forum of something similar and turned out to be a 1/2 shaft. so no easy way to tell.

My predicament comes from the lightweight being in the garage but its to small to pull a 1/2 shaft out! so will need to be done outside over a weekend I guess. Whats the procedure for 1/2 shaft removal? remove wheel/brake drum/swivel/stub axle? do i need to disconnect the brakes and bleed? hope not!

Just jack it up and spin the wheels.

I think Busters write-up for front axle dismantle is very good for what yu want, Griff.

Can you get someone to spin one of the wheels while yu listen to the diff?

is busters on his bus though? 110? the series is a bit different in that there seems to be a UJ along the shaft. I could get someone to do that, I only had a quick play around 4.30pm this eve when I got back. I think my plan is to remove both shafts for a look. hope. pray. and then maybe remove the diff if needed. need a full weekend for it though.

then i need to consider what im going to do about the rear x member i ripped off

did you not read my opening post? ;)

Yup I did and it aint nufin to do with propshafts turning, one wheels gona turn like a pram wheel with a rattle of a broken shaft if your lucky and the other with a bit of resistance coz its turning the diff bits, slight as it is but shud still feel it.

Oh and I'm too lazee to go back to the original post.:p

wellllllll why didnt you say that instead of "jack it up and spin the wheel" :D

now that you mention it, the N/S one spun like a good un'. better than my MTB! I think i will remove this side 1st and hope for the best... be a few weeks yet though as its not quite priority. :)

Have you got free wheeling hubs. If so then if your lucky one of those has gone wrong. If not then it would be worth removing both hub drive flanges to see if the splines have broken. You never know it could be something that simple. With the hub flanges off you would probably be able to determine if one of the half shafts has broken by turning the end of the halshshaft. If it seems like neither is broken, and your swivel housings and bearings are in good condition then disconnect the flexible brake hoses, steering rods and unbolt the swivel housing from the axle casing and withdraw them complete with halfshaft. Doing it this way will save a lot of time over totally stripping down the swivel housings, wheel bearings and brakes.

that sounds more apealing that what I have been reading Fen :)

no FWH, just the standard flat military ones. working away from home at the mo so wont be able to look until the weekend. hopefully its just a shaft and pulling the whole lot as described sounds better.

cheers,

Hopefully it's not an outer half of one of the halfshafts thats broken. I'd imagine those are a bit rare, though you could convert it to the civilian type I suppose.

I didnt think of that, ****e. because the flanges are flush unlike civvy series i suppose  One of the rears is allready converted. A call to Land Rover series and LR orphanage should sort it... once I know which bit has blown up.
