Gents,
Doing my brakes today amd thought I'd pull out the half shafts to check them and wasn't happy with what i found. Is this normal wear and time for a replacement If so which brand? I quite fancy HD Ashcrofts.
All advice welcome especially from James Martin!!!

Is it an optical illusion or has the end of the shaft been subject to torsional shear??

But they do indeed look worn, you can even see indentations in the splines where they have been banging about....I am afraid, it may be new half-shaft and drive flange time.

You mention Ashcroft HD stuff.....while this is no doubt very good....you'll have to check carefully if they have the right set up for your vehicle - as they only supply their HD shafts to a select group of Diff/CV combinations.

Also HD drive flanges are hit and miss on if they will fit with your wheel rim type - if your avatar image is your vehicle, then more than likely HD flanges are OK as you rims have a centre cut out that sits over the drive flange assembly on the hub.

If you have alloys are other such, you may find the HD flanges will foul on the inside of the rim preventing fitting the wheel rim back on!

As for recommending a brand - no idea, whatever sits best with your budget and vehicle use.

I've got wolf rims. Do the Ashcroft Half Shafts need HD throughout the system then?

shock load but not quite enough to shear straight off, long one is more likely to twist than short one
I've fitted them. They've had a good twist that is certain but not sure when. The drive train did feel a bit jolty. I'm going to do the oil in the axes and gearbox etc.
So hopefully all will be smooth. The old shafts had rusty oil on them but the water ingress maybe down to the fact that there were no gaskets on the drive flanges which I have now replaced.
