Freelander 2 (LR2) Haldex advice.

I’ve done all the usual searches and can’t find what I’m looking for, so apologies if this has already been asked.

My 2010 freelander 2, td4 manual, gets a thumping sound from under the rear of the car when turning left or right from a standing start. I can feel it juddering, about three or four times, depending how quick I pull away. Once I’m on the straight, everything is fine and I can corner on the move with no problems. It literally is just from a standing start. If I pull away in a straight line, there’s no thumping or judder, either.

From what I’ve read, the problem is the haldex unit. It’s a 4th gen. I’ve pulled the fuse and the problem stopped until I replaced it. My question is, would a haldex service cure this issue, or will I need a new haldex unit?

When was the fluid and filter changed? If the vehicle is being maintained as per LR maintenance schedule, then it's possible it's toast.
The Haldex in anything other than a Freelander gets fresh fluid and a filter at 3 or 4 years intervals, and 30 or 40k miles, depending on what vehicle the Haldex is in.
LR in their wisdom decided that 150k or 10 years would be sensible, but unfortunately most units don't make it that far before issues arise, and it gets replaced.

You could try a service, which might make it work correctly again (it did on mine), but if a clean and fluid replacement doesn't work, then it's likely you'll need to replace it.

If the vehicle is more than 4 years old, or done more than 40k miles (it will be), then the Haldex needs a fluid and filter change urgently, if you're lucky, it might just be suffering from a gummed up control valve.

Mine shuddered when pulling away, while turning.

My rear diff seized (replacement diff, without oil in it ) before I could address the shudder, so the Haldex got fresh fluid and a filter anyway.
After I installed a rebuilt replacement diff, I noticed the shudder had gone.

Thanks for that. My diff runs silently, so hoping that the haldex service may sort the problem. It is literally just a few second when pulling away on lock. I’m driving with the fuse pulled until my service kit arrives. Is that likely to do any damage?
