Hi all,
As the title suggests really, I'm getting a grinding/rubbing/whirring noise whilst driving. It happens in any and all gears, but stops if i take the lever out of gear or depress the clutch. It's been happening for about a week now and is not particularly getting any worse except for as few intermittent vibrations both when at speed and idling. Obviously transmission as when no gear is selected but coasting at any speed its perfect ruling out propshaft UJ's and brakes/bearings etc. has anybody experienced a similar fault? I do get a whine from the clutch after a cold start for a few seconds but that stops after literally seconds. Ideally id like to know whats causing it and repair, but even just knowing its gearbox or transfer box would save me replacing one to find its the other! I knew the three weeks of trouble free motoring since the propshaft failed was too good to be true

Thanks in advance for any advice anybody may be able to offer.

Noise stopping on coast doesn't rule out the prop shafts because the UJ's are no longer under load, get under and inspect them!

The props are both fine, the front UJ's and centre bearing of the double cardan are all around three weeks old and the rear appears fine also. The noise its self wont stop whilst coasting/not accelerating but if i drop it out of gear it stops instantly. Thanks.

Double check your front propshaft, I fitted 3 in a row to a customers car a few months back all were faulty in the double Cardon joint after approx 2-3 weeks each time, otherwise could be the dual mass on its way out

Do you think you might of wound up your transmission also is your handbrake releasing fully?

The handbrake feels fine and appears to be fully releasing. As for winding up the transmission i dont think so. Something to add though is that she was driven (short necessary journeys only) with the diff lock engaged whilst the front propshaft was removed around 3-4 weeks ago for refurb. Thanks.

Props seem fine but i will re-inspect in the morning. DM Flywheel has popped up a few times whilst searching the forum for answers, is there a way of confirming/ruling this out?. She feels like gear changes are less smooth than they were but that might just be me! I have all kinds running through my head whilst driving her and start relating every little rattle(of which there are thousands) to the latest fault :)

whether your in gear or not gears in box are still turning, is it any different in 4th

I don't believe the gear its in makes any difference but will test this in the morning to confirm. It seems to be when the engine and gearbox are directly linked that the noise occurs. The second i "separate" the two with either the clutch or even pulling it out of gear without the clutch it stops if that makes sense? Thanks.

Whilst there are some vibrations and rattles, neither would be the main words I'd use to describe the issue, does this rule out the DMF? would the thrust bearing cause the whirring/rubbing noise?
Thanks.

I would def say clutch bearing due to noise going when clutch depressed, if in box think it would make different pitch noises depending on which gear its in

When my front axle gave up and I drove with the centre diff engaged all sorts of awful noises from the drive train appeared especially when changing gear as in when power was taken away it stopped and also these noises continued for a couple of days after it was fixed I do honestly think I wound up the transmission.

Still no further with this however today i was able to lift her on a ramp and drive the wheels. Whilst i couldn't particularly go very quick the noise appeared to be from the transfer box rather than the gearbox. Out of curiosity i engaged the diff lock ( with a 10mm spanner from underneath) and went for a spin. The noise appeared to have stopped although it was only a short drive. I then disengaged the diff lock and the noise was back again but not as bad (I made sure it was completely off). Over the next maybe 10 miles of driving it gradually got worse and is now the same as it was. Does this sound familiar to any of you guys?
Also as a side question, if the box is knackered, can it be replaced without removing the gearbox?

Thanks all.

Still none the wiser yet. I dropped the oil in the transfer box and it was in nice condition ( its maybe about 6 months since a full swap although has a slight leak and drinks maybe a quarter of a litre every few months) there was also nothing stuck to the magnet other than a slight paste which i believe is normal. Obviously the oil change made no difference and the noise was still there.Today the noise got a hell of a lot worse and was accompanied by a serious vibration. I this evening removed the front propshaft and it all appears to have stopped? The shaft is upon inspection fine and has had the UJ's and centre bearing replaced within the last 2 months. This obviously rules out the gearbox, but does it rule out the transfer box? or front diff?
I know the thread is a bit long winded now but had i taken the advice of the first mechanic that looked at her i'd have bought a gearbox 2 weeks ago!
Thanks.
