Freelander 1 Grinding Noise

This only started today and has happened twice on the school run this morning, initially I thought something was stuck between the wheel and arch but on inspection that is clear.

I slowed down and while between 5mph and 0mph the car made a grinding sound like something caught between the wheel and well or the sound of something scraping underneath. The rest of the journey was fine with lots of stops but on the way home same thing happened when approaching the lights.

Home now and I cannot see any obstruction in the wheels or anywhere else nor can I replicate the sound.

Any ideas where I should be looking? Appreciate its a vague question.

Hi Jay.
When you are slowing down or coming to a stop are you getting any judder on the break pedal ? if so it will be the ABS, it could also be the bearing, or a break pad, whip the wheel off to check out the pads, at the same time check that a little stone is not trapped between the disc and back plate.
 
Hi, no no judder, the car drives as it always has done, just this started today, wasn't happening on Friday and has been in the garage since then.
 
If it's coming from the front, then it's probably the splash shield rubbing on the disc. If it's the rear making the sound, then it could be the brakes need looking at ASAP.
 
Hmm yes, I did have all those problems with the rear brakes but sound definitely sounded more toward the front
 
I agree with Nodge get somebody to go under it and lever the shields away from the discs a little repeat if it needs it
 
Thanks for the reply, brake pads have loads left, as do the rear drums, it hasn't happened today so might well have been something lodged but it wasn't the sound of a twig, sounded more like a log grinding along the bottom. Odd

It'll be the disc splash shield which is crumbling away, and flopping against the disc. It's a common problem, so most people simply pull off the rusting remnants of the shield.
 
Hey, I’m with nodge here, if not the pads then probs the disc cover.

Or maybe a stone was caught somewhere?

Just annoying you can’t lift a wheel at a time and spin it due to the 4x4 system.
