Can somebody tell me if the large lower speaker grills (bass speakers) on the front doors can be taken off without removing the door panels?

No, they are attached from the rear. The bass speaker itself sits in a pod bolted to the door skin.

Can you tell me what size speaker is in a 1999T P38A door? I would like to buy some aftermarket speakers, but obviously need to know what size to buy.

There are 3. The tweeters are obvious, then there are mids which I believe are 4" and the woofers I think are 6.5". Best bet is to remove the door card and take them out, then take them with you when you go to purchase your new ones, as you'll need to make sure the screw holes line up!

Bear in mind if you have the Harman / Kardon system, it's not a straightforward swap, as the system is 'tuned' for certain speaker parameters - so putting in any old speakers (even quality ones) may make it sound god awful!!

I'm pulling my rusty disco apart ATM, so give me a day or two and I'll dig out some exact specs for you.
