I'm looking at getting a GPS system, I've got a TomTom, but looking for something that will work off the main roads, anyone got any suggestions that wont break the bank, could even be laptop based, but if so what software/hardware do you use?
Any suggestions welcomed :)

download pikeys memory maps onto your pc, buy a cheap pda and sat receiver off ebay, upload maps onto pda and enjoy. Tom tom can also show all the legal (needs checking to make sure)byways by once again downloading pikeys/tom toms available upgrades

buy a garmin nuvi 265WT. you can get a reconditioned model (has factory warranty) for about half the cost of a new one. This model comes with lifetime free traffic and a widescreen. Then search around on internet and you will find every possible map you can think of available for this device for free. Garmin is the device of choice as it has th emost maps developed for it by third parties.

Cheers folks I'll have a look at the x-eng one, wont the garmin just offer the same as my TomTom?

change the maps on the garmin to topographic maps or whatever third party maps you want. There are thousands of third party maps avalible, sadly almost all are for the Garmin. TomTom is a poor cousin
