Got my new TD5 - couple of questions...

Hi there, I posted the other week about the 2002 facelift TD5 I was hoping to buy; well I've picked it up now.

It comes with a 30 day warranty from the dealer, and as it's just turned 84k (service interval), I was thinking of putting it straight into Land Rover for a service in the hope that they should know what they're looking at, and if they see anything amiss, I can go straight back to the dealer on it, within the warranty period. Good plan? Stratstone LR of Swansea have quoted me £270 for the service - is that standard or does it vary between dealers?

The coolant seems a little low which worries me. And it's not the blue stuff, it's pink/orange - not seen this before, is it the longlife stuff, and if so, can I top it up with any other pink/orange coolant?

The paint needs touching up - it's come off in the roof gutters and in the bonnet gutter. I think it's Oslo Blue - the paint code is 644 but Google won't help me - can anyone confirm if it is Oslo Blue? I'm guessing it is as I've seen some other posts with people having problems with this paint.

I think I have the self levelling suspension - It has the button on the dash to raise the suspension and also the orange dash light which shows an up and a down arrow pointing to the back bumper. Does this mean I should also have a remote control to lower the suspension, and that it's got lost along the way, or did they not all come with remotes?

you might be better orf putting it through an independant MOT, using a garage that is landy aware and asking them to be very through - might find some things you can get sorted for free during the warranty period

Hmm, I didn't think of that - it has got a very long MOT on it tho - 29th Nov 09. Interesting option, they'd look at a lot more things that a service would...
 
if the MOT was issued by the dealer you purchased it from, or from their favored local MOT place I'd defiantly suggest you get another one done - 30 days is a very short warranty

if its from a dealer should have 12 months MOT not 11 &a half !
i agree with sean should take it to a garage and have it re-done (if you got someone you know that can recomend a good garage be good too)
they'd probably do a service too if your not sure on the quality of the dealer you got it from .

Hi

The recommended coolant for TD5 is O.A.T which is orange. If you have 7 seats you will have air suspension but will not be able to lower the car remotely unless you buy the suspension fob and have it configured for the car.

It sounds like you are operating the off road suspension raise feature which raises the back a couple of inches below 30mph I think. It's good to try this as this would tend to show up any air bag leaks.

Just checked the MOT and it was done by the previous owner (car turned 6yo on 29th Nov) on the 20th Nov as that's when he brought it in to P/ex against a new car.

Will make enquiries to try to find someone who knows their stuff who can MOT it and service it :)

i would say the LR dealer will offer the more thorough inspection compared to an mot

Not only will the dealer be hunting for work, they will be working from an inspection service sheet specific to your land rover, whereas the mot is just a general inspection which will be done as fast as possible and they only inspect what they can see for example they wont check your brakes if they cant see them as they dont take your wheels off.

ask to see the different operations on the LR inspection service tick sheet. Lr inspection services are usually over 2 hours long and an mot will be between 35 - 45 mins at the most so math dictates that a service is more thorough than an mot.

my advice would be to get the genuine inspection service done for 260 quid, which doesn't sound bad knowing how long a proper LR service takes, it will probably come back with a load of advisories so get a quote for this work and then shop around.

Aw, thanks everyone, particularly Tonks4x4 and PE :lol: :D

Am thinking we will go for the LR service (includes a free 40 point visual check according to dealer website) as it needs doing anyway and it'll be nice to keep up the FLRSH.

£260 is a lot of money to be paying for a service that most normal dealers would have done pre the very recent sale - the concept of taking it for a much cheaper indy MOT is in the hope that they might come up with some issues that the dealer may have conveniently overlooked and which could then be rectified at the dealers expense during the 30 day warranty period
 
Yeh, but it needs the 84k service anyway, and it's got Landy service history up to 72k, so I'd like to keep the FSH. I bought it knowing that it was due a service, and IMO the price reflected it, so I can't really quibble that.

To be fair, the MOT was independent (previous owner, not Dealer), so I don't think the dealers are deliberately trying to hide anything, it's just a bog standard p/ex to them I think. And they're car dealers too, not specialist 4x4. I do like the idea of Landy doing the service as until I find someone local who really knows their stuff on Landys, at least I can be sure that Landy know what they're looking for.

And £270 isn't too much to pay for 12 month's peace of mind on a £5k car :)

I think most of the replies have assumed you bought it from a Land Rover dealer, but it sounds as if it was an other make (are there any?) dealer. In that case getting it checked by an LR dealer might make some sense.
 
Ah right, sorry, :blonde: lol! It was just a bog standard 2nd hand car dealer, no particular make they specialised in.

You can't really go wrong with a genuine LR service at a dealers, the only thing against them is the price and, as with all workshops (indy and dealer), in the not so genuine ones, the eagerness of the service advisor or technician to add unnecessary work onto the bill. People like Kwik Fit are renowned for this.

When it comes to diagnostic work LR dealers or LR specialists (who sometimes used to be LR dealers) using the correct diagnostic computers are the way to go.

It's easier to find a poor independent garage than dealer as a rule as there are so many indy's about. Do a bit of research into the independents near you because there are some good ones and some very good ones and some very bad ones.

The good ones, especially LR specialists should use Autodata or other manufacturer approved service sheets, these sheets are the same as LR service sheets so if you find an indy that uses them you are half way there as you will know that the correct things are being done at the correct time. If you find one that also uses high quality parts and the correct good quality lubricants you are onto a winner.

We are a franchised dealer for one brand but an independent specialist in another and also service all makes of car so independent dealership quality servicing like i described does exist you just have to look for it.

I'd stick with LR until you find one though

I'd disagree - I did exactly that with a 200TDi I knew was in poorish condition when I bought it and the dealer gave me a list sure enough. Took it to a non-dealer specialist and he not only found things the dealer had missed (BIG things!), he found that some of their reported "faults" were pure expensive fantasy. I'd find a recommended specialist and agree a reasonable amount to service and give it a thorough check.

If the garage you bought it from is not a specialist they may not even be able to fix items under warranty.
 
How do you go about finding a specialist though? Do I drop a note on the windscreen of any Discos I see?? lol! Or do any of you guys know a specialist in the South/West Wales area?

If the garage I bought it from can't fix the items themselves, then hopefully they should be able to sort something out - Sale of Goods Act etc...
