So, as I mentioned in a previous post, less than 5 hours in to owning a P38 I ended up with a suspension fault despite being assured by the seller all was well (quite angry with him now ). It was the christmas tree lights and no rise/fall from the suspension.

It was taken in to a RR specialist this morning (was booked in on Tuesday) by my father in law and they've just called me to say that the front 2 bags are badly perished and probably leaking and that the compressor is completely knackered. The pump itself was relatively new (I saw the receipt and looked at it) so that's annoyed me.

Anyway, RR London have quoted me £593 (inc vat) for parts and labour to replace the compressor and the front 2 bags. The bags were £60 something each and the compressor was £170odd.

So, having just forked out for the RR in the first place and now facing a bill of £600 to make it driveable (it's still in London.. I need to get it here to Edinburgh..!) is frustrating. I guess my question is whether or not this is a good price or am I being over charged quite a bit? I've seen other people talking about the bags being nearer £20 each and a pump being about £50.

If I could drive (or transport) the thing back up home I'd have my local mechanic do the work for me (no labour charge) for just parts. I don't think driving from London to Edinburgh with an 'EAS Fault' is such a good idea, is it?

Bit deflated! Pardon the pun.

I like that pun :p
The replacement bags MUST be new, but Island4x4 do them for pretty decent value; ~£190 for all 4 (exc VAT), and if the front ones are shot and the backs haven't been changed, they will soon go too. The compressor you might be able to get a reconditioned one, someone else will confirm or deny that.
Rust permitting, it takes about 30 minutes per bag DIY, and presumably less with lifts and all the right tools at hand so... I wouldn't say that price is reasonable.

My father in law is in London and took it in for me. I text him and let him know I was going to wait until Monday to let the garage know what to do. He went mental at me, swore a bit and told me to call them back and to do it.

£60 a pop for airbags is about right, an hour to replace them and the pump so a new pump for £170 plus £120 for the bags = £290 plus an hours labour at London rates, certainly not less than £400.
An overhaul kit for the compressor is about £20, so keep the old compressor, refurb it and you can sell it for at least £50 or keep it as a spare.
You should also do the rear airbags as they will be shot if the fronts are bad.

The rears are new - were replaced recently, less than 300 miles ago, as was the compressor. The old compressor is actually in the boot so ill have 2 old ones..!

Mind you, positive side is I've got the cable and software coming from your good self Keith so when I get that and the RR back I can keep it in tip top condition.

They won't ignore Trading Standards. :boxing::D
Trading standards won't touch it if it's a private sale, buyer beware and all that. If it's a trade sale, time for a recorded delivery letter stating the vehicle was not fit for purpose (see crock of **** thread) and saying you will be forwarding the invoice for their attention. Follow that with a 14 day notice of intended prosecution if they don't pay then county court.

Get the vehicle home...or pop down to London and refit the bags yourself....

Pump replacement and bag replacement is simple to do....save yourself a load, refurb compressor and replace bags...can be done yourself for £150 or so!
