You tested the wrong Discovery. The ride in my D3 is sublime, easily as nice as the ffrr. The EAS system in the Discovery 3/4 knocks spots off old fashioned coils under the X5 and you can take a Discovery off road.
However I hope you enjoy your choice, I love the Hitchhikers title reference
