hi all,
I am having problems starting my dhse and have been advised to prolong warming of plugs and do it twice, but still getting probs.
After getting some silly prices from garages to change glow plugs (235 + vat) was highest, I purchased a set very cheaply on ebay, but the garage pricing has got me thinking, how hard is it to change them?
So i'm asking anyone, is it difficult and do I need any special tools.
Thanks.

However, you dont need to do number 2 as far as I know (you need to remove the intake manifold though which would be covered in removing the high pressure pipes). I had mine done on Tuesday. I had mine done by my specialist as I dont have any spare free time to work on my P38 at the weekends at the moment.

It didnt take him long but when he removed the old glowplugs some of them disintegrated in his hands once he got them out and two of the glow plug connectors came off the wires. He crimped on new ring terminal things and heat shrinked them and voila, new connector connected to new glow plug.

Starting in the morning a COMPLETELY different story than before. I just flick the key on, wait for the glow plug light to go out and it fires straight up whereas before I could be cranking for a few secs and just before I had the plugs done I could be cranking the engine over for anywhere between 30-45 secs, which felt like forever :D

Please take care when removing the glow plugs as on some cars they wont budge and can strip the head on doing so, i havnt had the need to do mine yet so dont know if they come out ok on the range rover but my father in-law`s astra decided to hang onto 1 glow plug and break off the tip resulting in an expensive repair job so he just got rid of it.

If it doesnt want to budge i suggest leaving it to someone else to do for you.

Not sure how easy they are to change but recently had mine change at LR specialist and they charged me just over £6 a plug and 1 hour fitting at £25, bill came to £78 inc VAT, i was happy as a pig in sh*t. It was done at Famousfour in Louth if this helps.

My '95 DSE was also getting difficult to start from cold. I bought 6 new genuine glowplugs off ebay for £20.00 & fitted them all in 45mins, now starts like new, easy job.:)

hi mate if it helps i`ve done 2 p38 diesels now and it was a doddle , but as rangiep38 says odd time the job can go pearshaped so just be wary , i have had this a few times on other vehicles where the glow plug shears flush with the head !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! damn , what a pain it is then , but for what its worth i would give it a go .
