hello there, got a land rover 90,my first ever, very pleased with.
deisel.when i turn the key when cold it tuns over about 12 times is this normal,i put the key into postion 2 but where the indicator for the glow plugs is it does,nt light up if there is any body that could give me some help much thanks. jeff.

Firstly what engine? Different engines need differing amounts of pre-heat.

Assuming the glow-plugs are working ok and it is just the dash-light not working how much pre-heat are you giving it?

hi litch, the engine is a 2.500,what time do you think should give the plugs, thanks jeff52.

I have a 2.5 (15J) its glows are on push button switch, so when I have had the engine on for a while I don't even think about the glows.

I have been giving it 4 seconds first thing in the morning. In the winter I will judge it on the temperature, if its raelly icy I will give it up to 7 seconds.

I know this is not a direct answer to yuor question, but it gives you an idea of how long they should be on for.

Mines a 19J turbo, and doesn't like starting at all, at this time of year it will start sluggishly after 10ish seconds on the glow plugs. In winter it takes two goes with one tenish second and a second burst at about 5 seconds turning the engine over in between, all glow plugs are ok and the wireing is ok.

The ignition is on a push button and like Disco don't need to bother with the glow plugs if the engine's still warm, just one press of the button and it's away.

To test the plugs you can use a circuit tester, but I reckon the best way is to put 12V across them and if you burn your fingers they are ok.

Before the police come to arrest me, I was joking about burning your fingers. Hold the plugs in a vice 'cos if they are ok they will glow red hot.

Could still do with a bit more info as all LR diesel engines are 2.5 but they are very different (NA, TD, TDi & TD5).

In my experience a NA will need around 6-8 seconds pre-heat in the summer and up to 15 in the winter, any more than this indicates a faulty glow-plug which should be replaced (complete set of four is only around £15 and replaced in 30-mins).
A TD will normally require a similar amount of time as the NA.
A 300TDi will start with no pre-heating in the summer and will only need the time allowed by the timer-relay in the depths of winter, they are a much easier starting engine.

These timings are what I would allow before turning the engine, with the neccessary amount of pre-heat it should then fire up immediately.
