Quick question please on my new 2003 td5.

When starting up, should you give the car 5 mins to warm up?

Only ask as, again it might just be because I'm not used to driving these cars but the speedo seems to go up in slow motion and there really isnt a lot of power at first

In the auto box, when should it be going up the gears, as in at what kind of speed?

Just seems that it maybe is holding onto each gear a bit too long

Amazing the difference the sport button makes but that must be using fuel at a rate of knots!
 
Diesels work better when hot but they use up enough fuel as it is. Some cars you are supposed to let idle before switching off for turbo lubrication but I bet few ever do.
 
I start up and roll on straight away, take it easy though until you're up to temp. Always let turbo spool down though before switching off as oil feed is cut off when engine stopped
 
Warm up, 5 minutes isn’t long but if the vehicle is iced up it could be longer but if your concerned on fuel consumption you’ll be out on the road quicker.

D2 auto gearbox is control by electronics and depending on road and engine speed plus temperature, so a few variables there to give a definitive road speed fo gear changes, so could be sluggish also when cold it designed to stay in the lower ratios and won’t change into top gear until up to temp.

Plus the Td5 isn’t the most powerful of Diesel engines, that’s why a few owners have an engine management chip upgrade installed but like using the ‘sport mode’ increased performance = fuel consumption, something you may be concerned with.

I’ve driven a few new Td5s as demonstrators back in the days when they were in the showrooms and they didn’t seen that bad, but the lack of power to weight ratio is noticeable, plus the onboard stuff that I would never use, so I didn’t buy one.
 
These autoboxes seem to be a complete mystery. Mine when cold doesn't really like to let me take off very quick but once the ATF in the box is warm everything changes and it takes off very well. You might need a change of ATF and the filter in the gearbox, but other members may well jump in and say something different. You might simply have a leak and need to top it up. (Then cure the leak obviously.) But on mine this hesitancy on take off sometimes is not there, so I don't really trust the BCU. I should find out how to reboot it!
 
You dont need to warm it up and the autos are pretty sluggish. If you dont know when the box had an oil and filter change then i would do that first, check air filter is clean, get rid of egr then see where you are.
 
I used to have to let mine warm up for a couple minutes in the morning before it would pull away. Rest of the day it was fine. No different after ATF and filter change.
The chap I sold it to also commented on the same thing.

I am just conscious that I have come from a capri to this so it is going to drive completely differently

Just want to make sure I understand it before thinking something is wrong!

So hopefully you will all bear with me over the coming months haha

I start, put seat belt on, drive off.

Gives it 5 to 10 seconds before putting load on.

Most are remapped, see Dynachip, VERY few are now standard.

Yep that's the thing the service history for mine stopped at 2015 so no idea if its mapped or the egr valve is blanked etc
 
See this is probably my ignorance too...

When I'm going up a hill, the car really struggles sometimes

However when I select "2" or "3" gear (which I assume is me telling the gearbox to go to "2" or "3" at a max) it rockets up it

That would suggest then that the reason it is struggling in "d" uphill is because it is in too high a gear?

Is that something I need to do differently then when pushing the throttle before approaching the incline?
 
There is a chance it’s loosing power for other reasons, mine was behaving strangely prior to doing the injector loom. Not had enough time to check it since as it appears the crank pulley has let go!

Would the fact when I manually drop down to a lower gear it goes like a rocket not suggest it's just the gearing, no?
