I am getting really frustrated with the knocking/banging coming from under my Freelander. It sounds and feels like I am driving over a cattle grid. It is intermittent and can occur both when cornering and when driving in a straight line, it doesn't happen all the time and it usually happens at low speed. The only time I can be sure it won't happen is when driving at high speed on a smooth road. It often happens on uneven road surfaces when travelling in a straight line, but not when going over speed humps. So far I have replaced all 3 rear diff mounts, both U/J in the rear prop, the whole front prop and both VCU mounts. I really don't know what else to try now. Does anyone have any sensible suggestions? I did think VCU, but as it happens when driving straight and the VCU is not under load, I can't see it being that.

have you checked the rear subframe as a whole for movement ?
i think the securing bolts to the body can sustain damage
i.e. the part of the body to where they are fitted

is it not too obvious from where the noise comes from ?
i.e. front or rear ..

My best guess is the VCU, even if driving in a straight line you will still have a discrepancy in rolling diameter off the wheels, No two wheels are exactly the same diameter, so though the VCU won’t be working hard it still will be working,
Whip the prop off and see what’s happens? If no noise then you know where the trouble ls,

is there any unusual wear signs on the tyres ?

yeah .. i think it's a good idea to remove the prop

better safe than sorry .. i mean you don't need an 'effed up IRD

Strange noises from the rear of mine were caused by the fuel tank cradle being rusted through. One of the straps from it was occasionally rubbing on the propshaft, and it had been banging too, at times.

Ok, so new VCU ordered. It is probably well past its best by now anyway at 120,000 miles.
 
Drop links. They don't last long and account for a lot of knocking noise. They are at the front but the knocking can sound like it's more rearward. Don't buy cheap replacements or you'll be doing them again within a year.
