In order to make my dog happy, I want to put some kind of camper shell
on my '04 Ranger. It's an "Edge", small cab, stepside.

I'm getting frustrated trying to find camper shell manufacturers on the
web. I know Gem-top is supposed to make the best shells (and they look
good), but I can't figure out even in the ballpark of what they cost, or
if there's one that would look right on my truck.

Also, I've seen Leer shells that look like they have happy owners, and
Brahma, although I've only seen those on Toyotas.

It's frustrating as can be, becasue I just want to know how much these
things cost. I already know there's not "a dealer near me", and that's
the only thing I can find out. What do these things cost? (I do have a
limit to how much I can spend to make my dog happy -- I know I'll want a
sliding rear window as part of the deal too -- one with a dog-proof
screen no doubt! How much for something like that as well?)

Thanks (but no thanks to companies that don't put *info* on their
websites!!!)

Don't know where you are located but I just went through this for my 04
ranger, these prices are in Canadian dollars, so devide by about 1.25. I
called a dealer of canopies, all makes, or custom makes, my question was, "
how much for a canopy to fit an 04 ford ranger" his response was "I can get
you a canopy from $850.00 to $3,200.00", so then I asked how much for the
basic cap, he said "$850.00, then if you want add $150.00 for front slider
window, $150.00 for tinted windows, $200.00 for side sliders, $250.00 for
color matched and so on". Anyway I ended up buying one second hand from a
guy, 2 years old, front slider, side sliders, tinted, stepped up in the
back, clamps included for $800.00, so since no tax on this one probably
about 1/2 price. Hope this helps.

The local dealer sets the final price, not the manufacturer. So use the web to
find exactly what you want, then get on the phone and find the best price. Just like
shopping for the truck.

Okay, sure, but when shopping for "a truck" I have a vague idea if I
should even start looking. Do I want to spent $10,000, $15,000,
$30,000? I have an idea of the ballpark.

With camper shells I have *no* idea and despite hours of searching the
web, I still have *no* idea. I'm going to have some idea of what people
pay for these things before I talk to some dealer, or I will *not* be
talking to any dealer.

So that's my question. What's the price range of camper shells, what
are good brands, and how much would *you* pay for that brand? Don't
send me to "a dealer." Tell me what's right so I stand a chance of
getting a respectable deal from that "dealer". Please.

Your post is the moral equivalent of tying stakes to me and throwing me
in the hound pit :)
