Hi all, i was driving home today and i heard a bang and then my gears went. I managed to get it home but not sure how bad it is. i have been checking posts on here and some are talking about slave cylinders but i am unsure where i would find them (not sure my husband would know either). Any ideas please..
 
Sorry, i was trying to type so quick i forgot. i have a 1999 freelander 2.0 Diesel, my clutch pedal fell to the floor and stays there unless i pull it up. There is no resistance on my pedal and i cannot put it into gear. i have read on other posts that it may be slave cylinder has come out of its mountings and may be able to cable tied back in to place. But i do not know what it looks like or where to find it. Can you please describe it and its location, so i can see if it is that. Can i access it from under the bonnet or do i need to get under the vehicle? Is this model a hydraulic or cable clutch system?? Thanks a lot.
 
Yep it def sounds like the master/slave cylinder has gone and to be more precise probably the bracket has snapped!
It is situated on the front of the gear box, you will have to remove the airbox to see it, and repair it.
If the assembly has blown (this happened to mine, the bracket broke and the whole hydraulic assembly basicaly exploded) then you will have to buy a whole unit as they are non servicable, also if the bracket hasnt broken it is worth replacing it.
One other thing to look at is the plastic retaining clip on the assembly to bracket as these have also been known to fail.
As far as getting a new assembly etc, try Bearmach they were the cheapest , i think for the lot it came to about 70 odd pounds.
Replacement is pretty straight forward but fiddly and if you are in doubt and havent got a haynes manual, just download the Rave cd and it explains it all.

Thanks for your help. I took the airbox out and found a black hydraulic ram/piston with a plastic ball end, it looks like it goes into a little arm by the side of the engine, i think connected to the gearbox. Problem i have is, the silver piston/ram is fully extended and i cannot push it back in to the black piston housing. Also, i am not too sure what to strap or tie this ram to ie., the bracket, and i have found that the lever on the side of the engine/gearbox has no movement in it, i presume that it is too tough to move by hand. As the silver piston wont retract i dont seem to have the room to put it back on a metal bracket/fixing that it may clamp too. A plastic clamp/nut i can see on the piston has snapped, i presume this must be its fixing. can you please guide me into how to re-instate this hydraulic clutch system and do you think cable ties will hold it in place to get me through the weekend? Thanks
 
ok firstly the the plastic clamp nut is the fixing, so you are going to need a new one of those.
The best way to replace the piston is to try and apply even pressure across the ball by pushing it into the lever ( this will require quiet a bit of force) the arm will be quiet difficult to move but but there should be a bit of movement, try a little WD40 or similar on the linkage.
You can try and cable tie the hydraulic housing to the bracket( which is a big chunk of black metal on the gearbox) i have never tried this but others have, but it has only been as a temporary measure to get them home...i think...personally i would get a new bit and go from there.
Also have a good look at the bracket, as when mine broke it was the bracket that had snapped, not the plastic.
