Disco 2 Gearbox whine after turn off

Gents,

Upon turning off my manual TD5 disco, there's an audible whine that slowly decreases in pitch and volume and eventually stops after maybe 5-10 seconds. The whine seems to come from the gearbox, as if something is spooling down. I'm presuming the whine is there when the engine is turned off however isn't audible due to the noise of the engine. Recently replaced all transmission oils, with no effect on the above. Perhaps useful to note; the thrust release bearing is squeaky and the 'box is a little crunchy at times.

Any thoughts on what this could be and how serious it is?

Would that not be the turbo winding down ?

There was a similar post a little while ago, a suggestion then was that it could be the centrifugal oil filter. However as i have never heard it myself I can only pass on this info to you, hope it helps in your investigation.

There is nothing in the gearbox or transfer box to wind down. When it's not being driven nothing moves.

Could it be the air suspension servos / compressor settling? As this kit is situated beneath the passenger seat could the noise be easily thought to be coming from the gearbox when sat in the drivers seat?

Thanks for the replies chaps. Replaced the centrifugal oil filter a month or so ago. Haven't noticed any difference. The car is performing fine at the moment so will probably ignore it for the time being ha.

Don't panic about the noise from the centrifuge rotor, it's not age or mileage related, they did it from brand new, even at delivery mileage when being PDI'd.

If you want to double check that's wot the noise is then get I piece of wood or long screw driver and put one end on the rotor cover and your ear against the other end with the engine running and then get someone to turn it off for you then you will hear it wind down

If it is the rotary filter making the noise that's good. Means it's spinning!

Well, changed the centrifugal filter today, and Holy Moly, now it makes a noise...Turn the engiine off and there it is. Not sure if the old one did not spin or if this one is out of balance.
Not a nice balanced spinning down noise , this sounds like it is out of true, but when the engine is running you cannot hear it.

Will get another one as i cannot believe this noise is normal.

I've always used LR ones and some make a noise and some don't. Is yours a genuine or cheap one?

Sorry Griff,

I posted this with a youtube link, As I realised the title was for a thread about gearbox whine.

New post is on the disco section if you are interested.

I ended up taking the new Bearmach filter out and changing it back for the old one, peace and quiet now reign supreme. I will replace with a new item within the next week.
