Gearbox transferbox or other???

Hi everyone,
just returned from Holland leaving my 2003 4.4 vogue at a main dealers yard with a suspected gearbox gone.
sat in heavy traffic for 2 hrs then after half an hour 80 mph speed heard a whining noise whenever accelerating. this got a lot louder until we reached our hotel and then at slow speed she struggled to engage second gear and seemed to tumble back into first.
next morning started engine and the noise- much like an alternator whine but louder- was there even when she was in park! This seemed to be coming from under driver's side of the engine near gearbox.
got recovered, she can drive in first and reverse no probs but didn't drive any faster- but the guy loaded her under her own steam
could it transfer box or is it gearbox? had a gearbox service 6 months ago so very surprised it happened.
could the slow 2 hr crawl have done damaged because of not cooling properly?

would that interfere with gear changing?
def seems to be coming from bulkhead area
 
Range Rovers hate low volts, alsorts of weirdness can occur.

I would be checking the fluid level in the box is correct.

Reading some threads on here, it appears some garages don't know the correct fluid or filling procedure.....are you assured they did it correctly??

Even so, the level could drop if there is a minor leak that you haven't noticed for 6 months...might be worth just checking the fluid level and condition....the whining could be the hydraulic gearbox pump cavitating due to low fluid level!
 
when it gets back will get the garage to check the fluid in gearbox as they are not specialists. will check the alternator as well, just in case the noise is being pushed back by the fan
not transfer box thern, as I had the hi range message come up?
 
just binged and said: "hi range"
have had transfer box neutral a few times but not on that trip

Wwonder if your transfer shift mototr switch pack is failing!!

Common issue, the plastic it is madefrom is brittle and cracks!

Might wanna do some research on that!
I would still make the alternator the first check, but if the shift motor is playing up, why would it make the noise in P? There is no drive to the transfer box in P, indeed the output shaft from the auto box is locked..

Alternator long shot as blinking loud and there belt isn't slipping on rumbling on pulleys, so unlikely, but will check it

You might be surprised at how much noise an alternator with shorted turns can make, not to mention vibration:eek:
 
just had car dropped back by garage, they drained out some box fluid and it was burnt and had swarf in it. It still drives and changes gear although a little hesitantly. They say the box is kaput and needs a new one but still have had no lights on the dash!!!
So new gearbox looming but might sell it and lease one through my company. Still cant understand why got no warning lights
 
Just a quick one chaps: does the transfer box use the same oil as the main gearbox or does it have its own supply? I still think its the transfer box and not the main gearbox
