Gearbox T-Case oils, 90EP vs. others...

I drive a 1975 SIII 2.5L Petrol 4spd, and just yesterday went down to my corner parts store and picked up 4L of 85W140. After replacing gearbox and t-case fluids, I went for a drive. I realized shortly that I had made a big mistake. The stuff was so think that I could feel the engine working harder and it would sometimes stall out at stop lights.
I know that I am going to have to drive it again to heat it all up to drain it. My question is, must I absolutely use SAE90EP? Not OK to use a lower range, such as 75W-90 or the like? Thanks, LK

Stick with EP90 and I wouldn't run it to make the oil more viscous to drain it, just drain it and let it drip for half an hour.

Thanks, I'll take that advice. You don't think that I did any damage running it do you? I didn't hear any different louder noises, whining, grinding, clunking or otherwise... -LK
 
If you say that the engine seemed to be working harder I reckon that's because the layshaft or mainshaft may have started to "tighten" in the bearings due to the oil being thin. Just have to nurse it for a while and see how it goes.

I was under the impression that it was because the gears/layshaft/mainshaft were shlogging through thicker (85W140) weight oil...

Sorry chap, a mixture of my misreading and your spelling (think) either way too thin or too thick it aint going to do any favours. I only use thick stuff like Rhino 140 when I'm cheating with knackered pinnion seals on the diffs that I can't break the nut on.

Thanks Wesley, and I see my error now. I know that 140 can't be doing it well. I parked it immediately after the first run and will be draining it this weekend...replacing with the proper fluids. Lesson learned. -LK
