Hi all,
I'm due to get back to my series 3 resto this month, and looking forward the gearbox is gonna need some lovin,
A friend of mine from a course I did is doing the next level up this year and is currently stripping and rebuilding gearboxes. I've offered to bring my entire S3 box to that garage/college so that he can use it for his work experience with the help and expertise of the tutors. Which will be completely stripped and rebuilt down to the individual gears.

My question is, if you were to strip and "restore" an S3 Gearbox, what would you want to replace, service, renew, check... Etc.
So that I can buy those bits and parts now in advance for him to fit as he goes, save me doing it later with no expertise, and he gets a proper box to use.
Any info'd be great! Thanks, Ryno

Only definite thing is baulk rings and gaskets and the 3/4 synchro springs. Probably wise is bearings. But everything else you need to inspect and/or measure otherwise you'll spend a fortune.

Thanks for the reply! Those baulk rings are they likely to be worn out or in need of replacement?

Looking at paddocks theres a bearing kit for 15 quid, though its britpart :( and plenty of gasket sets and oil seals for cheap

you generally find you need a new first and second gear ,rev idler, 2nd and 3rd bushes, baulk rings bearings and seals ,but strip it first, and follow the manual if you have too much endfloat on the gears they will jump out on over run

Awesome thanks JM, not much then?! Will be ordering new seals, bearings and gasket for definate then find out whether or not theres any more of those needed, cheers!

why dont you get James to recon the box. thats wot he does for a living.
A. Didn't know he did!
B. Its for a friend to use as a rig and will end up being done better than I would probably dare me self so thought we could both benefit from it

May give him a shout if it needs further work, though will be way further down the line, as my current budget is barely permitting a half decent bulkhead... :D
Cheers fellas :)

Don't buy the britpart bearing kit, total crap. As soon as mine arrived and I felt them I ordered branded ones from LRdirect, £100 or so.
