Neil is the gear stick able to be rotated?
There is a groove in the ball part of the gearstick where it sits in the lower rubber should be a stud screwed into the alloy housing to keep the gear lever aligned .
If it is not present the end of the gearstick that does the selecting becomes jammed.

Just checked . gearstick does not rotate. Still only going into reverse gearstick seems really loose in what I can only assume is neutral , however this position
seems to be more at 5 o'clock position than central

Take the floor and gearbox tunnel out and have a close look at the selector / gearlever positions some pics would be a good idea.
I bet the reverse is not coming back to the right position and the gearlever end cannot then move over to the other gears.

Got one side of floor panel off and one side of tunnel unscrewed but other bolts are rusted on . will hacksaw heads off an replace . photos to follow

Got the tunnel off , gearstick seems to be aligning correctly with rods however not pushing them forward or back however as mentioned reverse seems to be going in correctly . I've included a photo there's loads of black grease all over it but no rust .

Could it be that the bolts halfway down the rods have become wedged together and each one is preventing the other from moving ?

If you lift the springs ball bearings and two cylindrical rollers out between the selector shafts all gear selectors should be able to move clamp bolts do not normally foul each other.
Reverse one goes back to engage.other two can go either way.
Are the slots at front of selectors fully aligned , as the two cylindrical rollers are there to prevent two gears being selected at once.

OK today I am very happy indeed I finally managed to get all the rusted bolts out of floor panels and remove tunnel fully . gears are now working there was a loose spring below the selector stopping it going into gear . now I just have to figure out what the spring is . photo to follow . Thank you all so much for your patience and advice

It was one of the reverse gate springs the one nearest to the passenger side I'm well chuffed . first job I've ever done on it and its paid off . One final question and I'll leave you all in peace (until next time) can I use standard bolts to put floor panels back it ? The ones that I took off had to be butchered as they were rusted in place . Thanks , new springs ordered and once they arrive it's all go !!
