Just got my first landy series home . surprise for the kids . drove it home 80 miles without issue . kids got in and now it won't select any gears . I have noticed that the small flexi hose that carries the clutch fluid is leaking whilst pushing the clutch pedal down . I will of course change this . Guy I bought it off said when I picked it up that you need to double clutch , friend of mine who has had numerous Land rover series (mine is a 82 series 3) says this shouldn't be the case and says isn't going into gear as if gate isn't opening . Do you think damaged pipe could be causing the problem.

series 3s are full synchro boxes ie not needing to double the clutch, unlike previous series ,full synchro came out with the later 2as suffix e boxes, it could have earlier box in or just be a worn s3 or not fully clearing clutch which a leak would cause, it is possible if it wont select gears with engine off that the 3 selector rods arent fully inline for the interlocks to prevent gear lever moving forwards and backwards can be cured by ensuring all selector rods are fully in neutral

I appreciate your response so do you think I have a chance replacing the hose or am I kidding myself ?

its not a too difficult job , just ensure you can slacken the bleed nipple on slave cylinder and when bleeding 3 pumps of pedal will leave the reservoir about empty presumably your hose is in the rear of engine bay not in footwell

Just check that the kids playing around in there have not pulled the red lever into neutral.
My grandkids are buggers for pushing and shoving on everything in site !

When you say its leaking when pushing the pedle down...is it squirting or dripping fast....have you check the fliud level....its the smaller of the 2 reservoirs.

Will it go into gear engine off????

Nick.

Won't go into gear with engine running or off . pipe drips when clutch pedal pressed . hose moves slightly and drips , does however seem to go into reverse.

Thanks

This is the brake res, (with servo) ...

ensure reverse selector rod is fully in its detent neutral position if it isnt you wont get other gears

Could be worn synchros if you cant double declutch. Leaking clutch fluid wont help with selecting gear. Reservoir is on top of the master cylinder which is to the right of the brake reservoir looking from the front.

Also would a loose mainshaft nut prevent it getting into gear? I had similar problems and that was the case, the tab washer had sheared allowing the nut to loosen which in turn allowed the mainshaft to move forward and back. Just a thought, PO might have recently fitted/ removed an overdrive and not tightened it up properly perhaps

Its the same as second picture and its full . should I also have something similar to first picture .Brake reservoir has recently been renewed , its gleaming, however up until now there haven't been any issues ( I'm told !!)

Locate the clutch master cylinder, take off the plastic cap. Fluid should be just below the lip. If your pipes been leaking a while I'd imagine it to be pretty low. Series 3 has seperate brake and clutch reservoirs

We can't tell really without looking ... any chance of piccys?

I've seen early series clutch reservoirs put in Series IIIs ...with one outlet blocked ... really weird ...but it worked
