In the middle of replacing gearbox of my 300tdi and having spent several hours removing the top nut on the flywheel/clutch housing i'm wondering can I leave it off on refitting as its a total pain to get to.Seems to me that the other remaining 12 nuts/bolts can manage just fine.If its a total no-no the so be it,i will just have to put the extra time in and replace.Put a new clutch kit in as well with a new release fork too for peace of mind as this is one job I do not want to repeat anytime soon!

Well that's it done! Aching all over after fitting new transmission.Done it by myself so split gearbox and transfer box and put them in one by one as no way could I manover the two together. Not having a hoist made for a long and tedious slog of adjusting the big ratchet strap passed over the roof and thro the windows to act as a hoist.Of course there were comedy moments such as bolting up gearbox cross member and then realising I needed to take it all off again to fit the new down pipe I had put loosely in place as its end was resting below the crossmember.Oh what a chuckle that was in the ****ing rain.Anyway after all fluids changed and a belt round the block all seemed good but wait a mo whats that noise from the back end, flipping rear shock lower nut busted clean off leaving shock flapping around. After all that this is how the Landie repays me! Looking forward to the horrors of the MOT due in Oct.

Yeah don't think I would attempt this again on my own or without a proper hoist.Even welding up a cradle to make ordinary jack into a transmission jack took half a day and every time I needed a different tool just dragging oneself out from underneath was a pain.Job took about 35hrs to do solo. Still replacement box got for £70 and new clutch kit and fork about £65.Add the cost of new oils for gearbox and transfer box about £45 brings total to £185.Not too bad considering local landrover independent quoted £800 to supply and fit 2nd hand box(without transfer box) with new clutch ect.Now to get back to the other project Landrover 1967 series2a ex Mil rechassis onto new galv.
