Afternoon all
I'm in the process of doing the clutch on my '98 1.8L Freelander. The Haynes manual suggests that the gearbox removal must be done by first splitting the IRD and removing the exhaust and drive shafts yet youtube would suggest that this is not necessary?
There is a youtube video with the gearbox being removed while both front wheels are firmly still in place - I.E no dealing with drive-shafts, or seized suspension bolts.

I'm purely after the clutch / clutch release fork access so if it can be done as suggested that's a win!

Cheers
Tristan

It is possible to split the box from the engine without removing the driveshafts. However it entails lots of forcing and twisting the inner driveshaft joints, which obviously will cause damage. The IRD still needs to be split from the box, or you can't move the box anywhere. The IRD is bolted to the gearbox and bracketed to the engine.
Your best bet is to do the job properly and do it once. You may as well change the clutch while the box is off. The clutch doesn't have a super long life anyway, so might as well be changed as a matter of course.

Update:
Took me a while as work got in the way, and work-shop space was tricky to access on demand.
- I removed the front wheels and driveshafts
- I was able to split the IRD/Gearbox and able to remove the 'box as a stand-alone unit
- The Clutch Plate was, actually, the culprit not the fork which was surprising (given how it presented the problem)
- refitting was fiddly but not impossible
