Hi folks. I’ve recently had a gearbox overheat caption coming on. Even when I’ve just started the car up. Thinking it was the sensor I got a new one. Now the one we thought was broken looked a bit sorry for itself so we replaced it. The colour of the new one was a reddy colour whereas the old one was black. The problem didn’t go away. I’m assuming the other sensor is the Ambient temp. So I’m wondering now if I changed the right one. Which is which, I’ve been all over google and can’t find sod all. Thanx in advance

It looks like these depending on where you buy from. Mounted on NS end of transmission cooler.

The sensor usually goes open circuit when it reaches the predefined "too hot" temp
short the plug on the vehicle side of the loom and the message will go away. ;)

Just looked in RAVE and the 1999 onwards diesel transmission cooler seems to have two sensors. The fan sensor is normally open, and closes when the temp reaches 95deg +/-3. I'm guessing the warning sensor is similar to the V8's which is normally closed, and opens at high temp.

Hence the different colours & part numbers.
