hi chaps n chapettes,

for the past week iv had a "whine" whilst driving which gets louder the faster you go..it only happens under load ie foot on accelerator, and once removed it stops, even though still rolling at speed.

1st thoughts were tranny box due to a duff UJ a few months ago.

BUT

tonight she became louder then a quick jolt as if something snagged then released itself, now the whine is there but isnt as loud as it was, but changing gear at times now is difficult and everynow and again i get a rattle, so this suggests to me that its the gear box

any thoughts?anybody had the same kinda thing

also whats easiest to change gear box, drop it under car, or whip out the while engine and box? i do have the facilities to take it out but could do withough the extra work of removing engine.

of its a 95 300tdi
 
Items that present a drone or whine which is constant when changing from one gear to the next BUT get louder the faster you go are either, transfer output bearing, front or rear, diff pinion bearings (just done both of mine) these I know with some certainty.

Other things I believe can cause this issue is the gearbox lay shaft bearing I think but not 100% sure.

As for gearbox removal, you can do it easily with engine in the car, I have done this on mine on my own. I think it is in one of my threads somewhere.

Check the prop play at each end where it goes in the pinion housing and the transfer box. Any play up and down and in and out (easier with the prop off) will indicate a worn bearing. See my thread for details as its the last set of posts.
 
Drop it in floor and change it, but of a pain to get
Bac on but easier than taking all engine out.

Can't help with your whine but I have a whine, only on overrun in 4th and 5th :confused:
 
diff pinion bearings would show noise on overrun long efore they were noisy all the time ,diff carrier bearings could give whine ,remove one prop at a time and run in diff lock ,that will isolate axles and too some extent output bearings, noise from a diff can seem t/box ,check oil condition in g/box and t/box badly worn parts generally show in the oil,is it quiet in 4th but noisy in the rest a symptom of layshaft bearings ,you can remove sump on t/box and check for play ,intermediate gear can have any play removed by tightening the outer nut carefully ,its quite possible gear box does need some bearingsa whine with no other symptoms is often the rear bearings in rear housing ,the box real does benefit from regular oil changes not the cost of the oil

Sorry to hi-jack but....

I took the props off 1 at a time yet the whine was still there, so will have a go at changing output bearings on tranny box see if that cures it.
 
taking props off should eliminate each out put in turn somewhat as theres no torque on them with prop removed,but they are cheap and easy to replace and can suffer off road with mud etc
